First, I'd like to thank those who responded to my first post in the rimfire section about scope selection for a .22lr build I'm doing. I'm new to the site and I've found that the guys on here are very knowledgeable and willing to help. The problem is, I've spent literally hours pouring over the optics sections reading reviews and comparisons and pro and cons and I'm still not even close to making up my mind. The first major problem is whether I need a mil/mil scope. I understand that it is easier for tactical shooting situations for ranging/quick shot correction. However I plan on mainly using it for shooting paper (definitely no hunting) So do I really need the mil/mil? It seems like if i give up that option, I can get a scope with more magnification for the same price. Also, if I get a mil/mil, do the guys who are shooting paper really end up using FFP that much, or am I better off with SFP? Any insight/opinions would be appreciated, before my wife divorces me for "looking at that stupid new gun website all day"

Re: Do I really need Mil/Mil?

If you were shooting a .308 or 6.5, I'd be giving you the dissertation of how MOA/MIL SFP=VHS and MIL/MIL FFP=BluRay.

BUT, it looks like you're shooting .22LR. You don't need to get fancy. For the effective range of the .22LR, you will likely not be making corrections with the elevation of your scope. Going FFP with a scope for that purpose seems like a waste of money IMO.

Re: Do I really need Mil/Mil?

plus if you have one on your centerfire its a nice way to train. there are 4 scopes under $400 that are mil/mil and some use them on 22s and some say they arent the best suited for the 22.

from midwayusa is the bushnell 3200 10x with no parallax adjustment

also from midway is the weaver 3-10x also no paralllax. both are on sale often.

millett trs-1 4-16x and its got a parallax adjustment

falcon 4-16x which has parallax adjustment and is ffp

so those are your choices in mil/mil unless you want to go over $400

Re: Do I really need Mil/Mil?

Great info as always. Thanks again guys. I think I finally made up my mind, and I'll go with the Vortex Viper. From what I've read it seem like good quality, great customer service, and reasonable price.

Re: Do I really need Mil/Mil?

Its all personal preference. FFP is a benefit for some shooters needs but it doesn't sound like your application would benefit a whole lot from a FFP. I went with a 16X SS for my 22 trainer. It is reliable, repeatable, durable and the glass quality is great for the money spent. I would give a look at fixed power scopes also. I was a little concerned I would not be happy with it on my Savage. But I am glad I went that route now. I have enough elevation travel to go out to 400 yards and a little beyond. Its hard to argue $300 that serves every purpose I need and want.

Re: Do I really need Mil/Mil?

I went with what I could afford first. This is my first year getting in to LR shooting and started with a budget. Luckily, i was about to get a FFP Mil/mil bushnell elite tactical.

Use to train with what you will use to compete with, atleast from what I have learnt in my new journey.

FFP means as you zoom in on your target the crosshairs will grow with the back image you are shooting at. SFP means your target will get bigger, but your xhairs stay the same size.

Makes it easier in my opinion because there is no guessing between your levels of zoom, its going to be continuous.

Also, mil dots are easier to learn for a beginner in my opinion. I am a beginner myself, and when I compared moa to mil, I went mil route.

Keep reading, those who learn more are those who listen more.

Re: Do I really need Mil/Mil?

Call me crazy but I think you might be overthinking it with a 22..... I have a $150 6-24/44 BSA midway exclusive on my 22 and it works perfectly for the 22. Anything that holds zero and has enough magnification should work.

Im getting a vortex viper in for my .308 though.

A Simmons will work fine for a .22
