I’ve had this Frost River backpack for two years and just spent about 45 minutes reapplying filson oil cloth stuff to it and it looks brand new. It’s been through a lot in two years. I saw a guy once with an oil cloth hat i’ve been looking for and haven’t found just yet, bet it’s awesome in the rain.

I also spent the day conditioning my motorcycle leathers for the rain and cold coming up.

ETA - My favorite front bag is an oil cloth mini fortune cookie, I have an outback duster and pants for equestrian sport and hunting int he ran if GORETEX isn't packed. I've had a couple oilskin cowboy hats but they didn't "fit" me so I never wear them, I'm still waiting to come across the right oilskin ball cap.

Sorry to hear that you’re 4 wheel vehicle is broken down just as we’re going into winter 😂
I’m such a pussy when it comes to the cold.
Hell, I’m bitching cause the heater in my car won’t get hot fast enough 😭

I bought some of the speed cycle heated gear before last winter as long as there isn’t ice and salt on the road tempter and rain is no longer a concern. It really helps, but I prefer to ride when I have traction and aren’t rusting my frame.

ive grown to really love wool. I fish a lot in shitty conditions and wool really works well
That's the nice thing about it,especially when wet.
I'll take a natural durable good over a super duper best tech for a week product anytime.

I've been wearing Carhartts for almost 55 years and it throughly sucks they are not made in the USA anymore.

I swear by their wool lined coats.

I have a really nice wool blanket, I got it from a survival site, it's soft, thicker, and probably twice the size as a USGI wool blanket, I like it's weight, but until you get used to it it's itchy, I have a kifaru wobble I usually put between me and it when we go camping. Instead of the expensive wool Filson stuff I bought some WWII/Korea era wool pants that worked ok until I got fat and now they don't fit.

Pick up a military surplus goretex rain suit, it's a baggy top and bottom in either M-81, ACU, or Multicam, eBay has them so do surplus stores you can probably pick up a complete set for $75-$100.

Get a big one because you'll want it to be your outer layer, it's rain and wind proof but won't keep you warm.

I tried a set of frog togs but the pants ripped on my first outting, I still have the top somewhere because they worked great other than how frail they are.

Another side story - A couple years ago I killed a doe muzzleloading it was drizzling and snowing so I had on the oilskin duster and hat, I was even using a modern primer fired muzzle loader. When I grabbed the ATV to pick the doe up my wife took a photo, which I shared with a coworker later. He said I didn't know you were into historical reenacting/larping, only time i've ever been accused of larping. :cautious:

Old school Filsons are the way to go. All of my upland hunting equipment is oil cloth. I also have several jackets, as well. Best advice is to apply the Filson oil cloth stuff outside in the warm sun with a cold beer or two.

I would like to get me a rain suit for fishing and hunting that’s made form gore Tex

    Check with @LAR Dragoon

Maybe he has some male sizes....

Its not larping if you live it.

Always feel like a larper when I put on a set of WWII canvas leggings but their light color and soaked with permethrin makes them great in a ticky world. They also keep shit out of boot laces and pant bottoms.

Count me in the wool/waxed canvas fanboy group

I have a Filson tin cloth packer hat, two McAlister waxed canvas jackets (see below for stock pics), a McAlister duck hat, McAlister waxed canvas waterfowl wading vest, and a couple of cheap branded (Remington and Beretta) waxed canvas ballcaps. All that stuff got plenty of use when I lived in KS and shot waterfowl every weekend fall and winter.

If you need warm hands above all else few things beat a pair of Dachstein wool mittens.

On the wool side, I absolutely love my Derby tweed jacket. I wear it in town and in the field. A little too warm if you have to hoof it a lot, but for light to moderate activities it's perfect from 40 deg on down. Plus it's roomy enough for a close fitting layer like a light wool jumper underneath.

It's really my ideal garment for sporting clays in cold and/or damp weather

I haven't bought anything Carhartt in many years.
I'm still wearing stuff from the 80's.
However, the last stuff that I did buy I returned it the next day because it was made in Mexico.

I had a couple dozen pairs of bibs and jeans from Roundhouse.
They used to make a wool lined loggers jean that were indestructible.

Since I retired,I gave away enough stuff to get a guy from his apprenticeship to his retirement if he takes care of it.

It is really hard to find quality clothes at a local level.

    OP,
I like both. I picked up a Filson jacket many years ago and while it was not bad, I felt it could be better. I bought one of these last year while back in Wyoming and I like it better than the Filson I had.

Frog Toggs are still used and if you use them on the bike, make sure you get the Highway Toadz line as they are better than the regular Frog Toggs. I carried a set on my bike but now I keep them in the truck in case I need to get out in the rain while wearing a suit and tie and change a flat tire.

Ditch the leather for the raining season. I have a few sets of leathers hanging in the garage but for wet conditions, I use a Dainese Gran Turismo jacket and pant. I wear this same suit all year long and it keeps me cooler in the summer and dry in the winter. Along with some Gore-Tex boots and gloves, you will have no problems with rain. Might be more than you want to spend but there are other less expensive options out there.

Do any of you guys remember, long before the buyout that Cabelas used to carry most of the items mentioned above?
Now that Bass Pro bought them out, all the good shit is gone and replaced by high profit items.
    Fuckin sad.

Anyone make their own oil cloth?

I have a green cotron tarp I got from harbor freight, I have been putting off mixing up some wax and stuff to try and coat it to make a camping tarp on the cheap. Also considered trying it on a pair of old bluejeans to see if it turned out.
