There's a relatively modern book called 'The Wonga Coup' that deals with another coup attempt that occured in Equitorial Guinea in 2004 - that has some strange parallels to the one Forsyth fictionalized (and may well have financed) in 'Dogs of War'. The book is much better.
Forsyth pretended to be planning a coup while researching the book, later said that the arms dealers he met were the most frightening people he had ever come across. Much more so than the Mercs who mostly seemed to have a sense of honor (or were at least loyal to each other).

Great movie - I broke down and bought it a few years ago because a couple of friends had never seen it.
