I know that those are all great calibers but last year my event was won by a 20" POF-USA in the 6.5CM caliber. Granted the shooter had a little bit to do with it but you also might want to also consider this caliber(6.5CM). Personally I will always stick with a .308 even though it is out performed by many. The simplicity and availability of reloading components and parts make it an easy choice for me. Good luck on your build.

Re: Doing a Gasser for a match rifle

Already have a good 308, looking for a little fatter round. Creedmore was one I was thinking about, but with an auto, I loose a lot of brass and creedmire just isn't on the shelf @ Wally World.

John,

I have been toying with the idea to build a 6.5x47 out of the .308 gasser. I get far better performance with this round compared to previous 6.5 Creedmore guns that I have played with. I just don't know if there would be feed issues or not, I would assume not, since the shoulder angle is so close to a .308. The rounds fit perfectly with room to spare in .308 Pmags I have sitting around here. Just some food for thought.

Re: Doing a Gasser for a match rifle

I would do 260 with Remington brass. Any gas gun that I have ever owned, I have lost about twice as much brass as my bolt guns.

I used to have a DPMS 260 factory gun that shot in the .6" 5 shot group range, with 139gr Scenar handloads. I would usually get 4-5 reloads out of the Remington brass, if I didn't lose it first. It was a great gun, and I wish I hadn't sold it (as with so many others LOL).

Looking at Powder Valley, Remington 260 brass is about $.40 a pop, and 6.5x47 Lapua brass is $.88 a piece FWIW.

6.5x47 feeds fine. Brass? Not big enough a deal to be a big deal. Get Lee Wells to chamber and profile your barrel. Did mine and it shot 3's. Use an Armalite bcg. The others firing pin holes are too large if you want any kind of speed - primer extrusion. Lee specializes in x47.

You will love it. i do.

p.s.
The upper left hole is a pistol round.

Re: Doing a Gasser for a match rifle

I'd seriously consider the 6mm AR that Robert Whitley is building for match shooters.
Around 2700-2900 ft/sec with a .55 G-1 BC depending on barrel length and case design, all in a small framed AR.

Otherwise I'd go 260 for the large frame.

Minimal recoil in rapid fire is very appreciated.

The 6mm AR shares the same basic case design as the 6mm PPC.
The 6mm PPC is an accurate cartridge (understatement).
1/2 MOA in a gasser out to 600 would be its forte.

Thats a good point, as an AR tears up brass. You can get cheaper .260 brass, and not loose much if anything out of an AR platform.

Re: Doing a Gasser for a match rifle

7mm08 brass is made pretty easily from .308. Bullets are a little less than 30cal and have great BC.

I'm building on an MA-Ten set now and I was considering the .284 Win. I decided against it because its a bit overbore and I didn't think it could take advantage of the rate of fire an AR is capable of without building up a lot of heat. It would be an interesting rifle indeed but in the end I didn't want the headache. Eventually somebody will probably make it work though.

Re: Doing a Gasser for a match rifle

Jon,
I'd do a 260 or 7mm-08. The .243 pills are harder to spot if you have a miss. You can make 7mm brass just pushing it through
a .308 sizer. The 162 Amax and 168 Bergers are good compromises
for BC and velocity with that round.
