I am wanting to get an AR type in .308 WIN and having a hard time deciding how to go about it. I like the idea of the GII of being lighter by a bit and having some more compatability. However to my understanding it is easier to mess with the more standard DPMS 308 stuff.
Thoughts and opinions? This will be a medium range DMR type rifle capping out around 700-800 meters for the extreme end. but also being somewhat capable of closer up stuff too though I know it will suffer a bit in QCB indoor stuff due to a longer barrel for the longer range.

If you are looking at customizing the rifle to a set up that fit your personal wants go with the LR. You can also just build one from scratch for less money with all the parts you are wanting. Yes the Gen 2 is slightly lighter and now more companies are coming out with parts for it; however the aftermarket for the LR platform is a lot larger. I just built one off of a Maten upper/lower that with scope is under 10 lbs and I wasn’t even trying to build it light. So you could easily build one up to the same weight or less than the Gen 2. My suggestion is to go with LR platform.

If you have the money you can build an LR lighter than a GII using the Xanthos receivers. Otherwise GII will likely end up lighter.

If you go GII, just buy it to keep as is. There are minor improvements to be made, but the meat and potatoes of the rifle are very proprietary. The SASS is a great gig for what you are looking for.

Otherwise, go LR.

for what you are wanting to do I would buy the DPMS as is and add the Burris 1-8x. Once you want to tighten up on the groups order one of our .308 1/8 twist 16" mid gas barrels and gain tighter groups, and still keep the range out to 800+ yards.

I was thinking an 18 in barrel on it. For what I know with the GII I would be changing the trigger, stock, handguard, maybe pistol grip, and the muzzle devise would be my plan and depending maybe a different barrel.
As for the LR I would be thinking a bit more exotic asking if the one company can fuse

just to get at least the dust cover on it maybe forward assist. I have army OCD on certain features of how a AR style rifle should look/work and my biggest pet peeve is the dust cover. I will take and tell whoever, "oh hey your dust cover is open."
Then get Magpul MIAD pistol grip, several position buffer tube, a keymod handguard maybe samson, good 18 in barrel, maybe a timney trigger or geiselle, unsure exact buttstock.
As an additional note I just enjoy modding firearms as a garage gunsmith. did the trigger on my pistol which is very nice and much better than the factory one. The ARs are the easiest to do.

If you’re willing to go 20”, I have a used 20” Krieger barrel, M110 contour with DPMS/SR25 barrel extension, SLR adjustable gas block and tube, and a brake I’m selling as a package.

could you show me some pics of that CSAR? and an adjustable gas block is something I keep forgetting is a good upgrade especially for more precision builds.
