I recently traded an AR15 I built a few years ago for a relatively stock DPMS Sportical LR308 with a 16" barrel as is standard on that model.

I want to start to build this rifle for more long range shooting, my current upgrade list is looking like the following:

Geissele DMR
Magpul PRS or UBR
APEX Free Float Extended Rail
Rainer Ultramatch barrel or Krieger Barrel in either 18" or 20"

I think the parts list is pretty solid, my question is whether or not it is worth it. I obviously can add and subtract and see what my total costs will be. I want to know if this weapon will perform at 1 MOA or less or if I should sell what I have and start somewhere else.

Re: DPMS LR308 - Build or Sell

With a quality, free-floated barrel (the ones you mentioned are quality), a good trigger (like the DMR), quality ammo, and a shooter doing their part, it is not unreasonable to expect MOA or better accuracy from that setup.

As to whether you start with your stock sportical or sell it and start with something else like a ground-up build from a receiver set, etc., that's a call you have to make based on your own budget, timeframe, etc.

Re: DPMS LR308 - Build or Sell

It may shoot well and it may not. I started out with a SASS and was not happy with how it shot. I re-barreled it and it did not shoot any better. I was fed up and ordered a JP PSC12 upper for me. It shoots great but I have way more tied up in that rifle than a GAP10 or a Larue OBR would have cost me.

Re: DPMS LR308 - Build or Sell

I have read mixed reviews about DPMS. The modifications to the weapon will leave me with basically only the upper and lower recievers intact from the original gun. Are there any concerns with the strength or machine work with these pieces that would justify purchasing new ones?

Re: DPMS LR308 - Build or Sell

You would be upgrading all the important (to accuracy) parts so to purchase new on the others would be a waste of time.
The remaining parts will work just fine otherwise you might as well sell the gun and start from scratch.

Re: DPMS LR308 - Build or Sell

1. How much will the upgrades cost?
2. How much does a complete rifle with what you want cost?
3. How much ($) can you get out of your curent rifle?

If 2-3<1, then selling and buying a complete rifle makes more sense. However, as someone already mentioned you plan to replace the important parts. If you cannot get much money for your current rifle then it makes more sense to upgrade what you have.

I have a mostly stock DPMS LR-308 (24" stainless bull barrel) and it shoots hormady match ammunition at ~0.5 moa (100 yards)- or has the capability to do it when I do my part.
