DPMS Recon .308

Hi Guys,

I just picked one of these up yesterday on a bit of an impulse. I have a Bushnell TRS-25 on it for now. I'd like to use it for home defense as well as for deer hunting "in the woods," which is mostly how the hunting is around my area. Not a lot of wide open space here.

The P-mag fits these correct? I'd like to get some 20 rd. ones...but I need a 5 round or smaller magazine for hunting. Does the plug that they make for the P-mags fit in the .308 version? Or do I need to buy a DPMS 4 round magazine?

I'm also looking for a sling, I was thinking of the Magpul one. Any suggestions? Thanks.

pmags will fit. magpul makes spacers for the ar15 but I am not sure about the 308 mags. I like the magpul mags and sling alot but I refuse to pay $50 for a sling. I have 2 of these KZ sling .

I found one at the Cabela's down in Scarborough, ME. I was pretty shocked they had it as I had heard these were hard to get...actually they only had the .223 on the shelf, and the clerk was getting ready to fill out a "request" form for me, when he discovered they did in fact have one out back. I knew it was fate at that point.

I'd strongly reconsider using this as a home defense gun unless you live alone and have no neighbors at all. That .308 is gonna go through probably damn near every single wall in your house. I don't even keep my AR-15 handy for home defense, that's what good old 870 is for! I also keep a pistol hidden away.

I do live in a rural area, but the other people in my house could make it a definite concern. I'll keep that in mind. Granted I wouldn't want to fire any gun in their general direction...I guess the question is whether I would remember that in the event of an intruder.

that is awesome.... i almost purchased one of these before i went hog wild on my LMT MWS.... IMO, the dpms recon is one of the best "bang for your buck" .308 rifles you can purchase that comes with a stainless steel heavy barrel. Nice rifle my friend.

Thanks. I'm pretty pleased. I also debated a Sig 716, and a SCAR 17s, but both are more money (the SCAR was $3k locally) and I just couldn't justify them over this gun for $1400.

Unfortunately I haven't done any accuracy testing per se. I have just been fooling around with the Bushnell TRS-25 so far, but I have been hitting most everything I have been shooting at. I intended this to be more of a "battle" rifle, for close range and hunting in the woods.

I have only fed it PMC so far, it malfunctioned once in about 80 rounds. It chambered the round but either I had a light primer strike or it didn't set the trigger at all. I should have payed closer attention. There was a mark on the primer but that could have been just from the firing pin bumping it when the bolt closed? I'm an AR novice so not sure to be honest.

I have used it with both the DPMS 20 rd. that came with it and a P-mag. The one malfunction was with the P-mag. But the P-mag goes in nicely and seems solid.
