Hello all, I am new to this site, I was told to ask my questions here as you guy were good with the info..
I have a DPMS Sweet 16 and have had it for many years, I believe it was one of thier first models.I was wanting to up grade some of the acessories on it. I'm looking at a Magpul sniper stock W/cheek and legenth adjustment. A 4.0 buffer and am looking to lighten up the trigger to about 2.5lbs. At 200yds I'm hitting anywhere from 2-3in.from the bull using cheep comercial ammo and in the process of getting into reloading to work up my own loads. I am going to the gun club to qualify on the 600yd range and was also wondering if any one would know the range of a well set up sweet 16 or what I should expect. Any info on any upgrades that I could do with it would appericated and comments are welcome.

Marine68,

First If you were or are a Marine, THANK YOU for your service!

And second... Welcome to the Hide. Be prepared to loose all of the money in your checking and savings account. But... It will be fun along the way !!

IF my memory serves me right the Sweet 16 was a HEAVY barrel AR15 that DPMS put out.... Correct??

I thought they were 16" barrels as well..

Providing that those are true, you would have NO problem getting to 600 yards... and under the right conditions... ie ammo, shooter etc.... 1000 yard mark is VERY doable.

When you get a chance post up a pic, let us know exactly what your wanting to do with the rifle.

Setting it up for distance shooting may mean you heavy up the rifle and spend some money... but those are things many on here can give you a source or two to go to.

Re: DPMS Sweet 16

mm128, Thanks for the reply, I'll post a picture tommorrow. Your right, it has a 16" heavy barrel, 1-9 twist chrome lined. The upper dose not have a forward assist or shell deflector. Anyway I will post again tommorrow. Thanks for your service also, You know why us Marines are still with the Navy don't you Chief? Beside having the best corpsman in the world, we never did learn to walk on water, lol.

Re: DPMS Sweet 16

Here's a FWIW. My shooting buddy has one of those and it does shoot really well with good ammo. Consistant 3/4 moa to 300 yards. He has shot it to 600 (limit of our personal range) on the steel we have. That is not with factory ammo as we rarely (as in hardly ever) shoot factory stuff. 69 SMK's and Varget is what it shoots the best with.

He has changed out the trigger and that's about it with this rifle.

We also have a Hawkeye and that barrel ain't to pretty, if you know what I mean, but it shoots well anyway. Kind of like a Savage I suppose.

Again, FWIW, I have a MagPul PRS and love it on the rifle it is on, but I would not put it on a 16"er. Your rifle is kind of heavy anyway, why make it heavier? It's a personal thing with me as I have gone heavy and now I am going lighter on my M4.

Re: DPMS Sweet 16

DHD is right on. The PRS adds some weight... but it does look good and has good function to it. If you NEED the adjustment from a stock, its the best way to go...

Like he said... TRIGGER and GOOD OPTICS are the ONLY things you will need other than ammo.

Re: DPMS Sweet 16

mm128 & DHD thanks for the info, I agree about the trigger and stock they are only astsatics and do not have a hole lot of advantage, I'm also twisting the wife to let me invest in a reloader. I used to work up loads for 7mm remington mag many years ago and am reading up on it again. What grain would you suggest, I was looking at the 60 or 68 grain spitzler but not sure what FPS to start out with for 500-600 range. The scope is just a cheepo and am thinking Leipole and Harris bi-pod. Excuse my spelling can't find a spell ck. was going to post a couple of pictures but having problems.
