So I tried to inquire into this before and the thread just kind of died due to lack of information perhaps on my part and I just got pushed to other links that were extremely helpful, yet didn't have any personal experiences with particular brands, just what there is out there and what to look for. So yes you can have great parts, but what good does it do if the manufacturer doesn't put them together well? So here goes, I would like an ar15 in 5.56 capable of anything and everything if that's possible. I'm a big fan of the saying, "Beware of the man with one rifle. He probably knows how to use it." I would like to able to mount an Aimpoint, and then be able to mount a Nightforce 1-4x24 when I want to stretch its legs. I would like to be able to use it as a DMR or recon role, as well as CQB if necessary. I guess I'm more aiming towards a tactical rifle with a 14"/16" barrel. And just to answer the question of price range, there is none really. Hence the title Dream AR15. I'm not rich or anything but I know quality costs money, and I'm willing to spend it if it's worth it and save when it's not. As I keep reading on here, "Buy once, cry once."

I've been trying to avoid the excise tax of buying a complete rifle and buying an upper and a lower, but I honestly have no idea what I get in each box/how to put it together. I know research would help, but I'm a pretty busy guy and squeeze all of my free time into getting out to shoot in the first place. So if it's pretty easy, I heard someone say it's just like putting Legos together, I would definitely give it a try, although I definitely lack the confidence of putting something together that goes boom. I would prefer to leave as much of this up to the pros. Also High Caliber Sales and Specialized Dynamics have been suggested. But other than a Geissele SSA-E trigger, maybe an adjustable gas block for the option of putting on a suppressor, and a Magpul CTR stock, I don't really need anything "custom" unless they do indeed do it better with equivalent parts.

I have been looking at piston rifles from Noveske, LWRC, LMT, a Barett Rec7, etc, and am not any closer to really choosing a brand except for maybe leaning towards the Rec7 because of Lowlight's review with the US Optics scope (although I haven't heard of anyone else's take at on it), and Noveske because I hear they have awesome barrels and they pop up in many people's top choices more than others (at least from what I've read). Personal experiences of these brands would be greatly appreciated. I know there are a lot of fans of BCM, CMMG, and Rock River and such but I haven't really been impressed by what I've seen/heard. I hear they're good but I'm looking for great. Am I getting caught up in the "If it's more expensive, it's got to be better" hype?

I thank you in advance because I guess it's just hard to find a gun shop where they have these weapons available to try, touch, play with, etc, and people's personal experiences/stories and suggestions are all I really have to go on. All in all I just want a versatile ar15 I can trust my life to. Reliability and accuracy are everyone's goals aren't they?

Re: Dream AR15

I have an RRA lower, jp trigger, jp upper in 5.56. Deciding on optics currently. My opinion is to buy what u can afford. My rig will be close to 3k when done but will be tight. Good luck

Re: Dream AR15

I'd screw brand affiliation personally. Pick up one of the new melonited barrels (longevity over CMV/SS/CL etc), use Larue throwlever mounts for the ACOG and long range optic.

That's about as far as I could advise- the spendy triggers I have no experience with - I used a JP in Iraq and at home, and it's been a good trigger for me.

The only spendy part that seems to make sense is the Noveske switch block. If you want to run a can that might make sense. Not necessary, but why not if you don't care what you spend. Might as well grab a PRI gas buster charging handle too. Stick with the 14.5" barrel- it's long enough with a can. <if you intend for CQB to long range.

Re: Dream AR15

Any rifle with a mid length gas system and a H buffer. Look at the Daniel defense they seem to be offering the most bang for your 1,000's. Complete rifle can be anywhere between 1500 with eotech or a lil more for a 1-4 optic. The mid length gas system will allow you to run a can if you want it with out causing bolt tilt. Since money isnt an issue just get the SCAR 16s and a good 1-4 optic and call it a day. You cant go wrong with any of the companies like daniel defense, lmt, pof, FN, or loki weapon systems.

Re: Dream AR15

I went with High Caliber Sales Mk12 Mod 1 upper and a yankee hill lower with Daniel Defense fire control parts and a M16A2 butt stock. The trigger is a SSA-E. I like rifle length gas systems, for me the reliability and the recoil seems to be a smoother type recoil but thats just my opinion.

I bought the Mk12 becuase its a precion AR15 design and if needed can still do some close up work. The upper from High Caliber Sales is a legit Mk12 upper and all excellent quality parts and precision barrel.

Hope this helps.

Re: Dream AR15

skip the switchblock
definitely pass on the nf 1-4x
don't waste your $ on pistons

put your $ in the barrel.

the geissele trigger is worth the extra $

the CTR is a great stock for a light carbine, but it's not as easy to manage the butt and get a decent cheek weld compared to the UBR. if you're MOSTLY doing precision stuff, go UBR, if mostly carbine class type stuff, go CTR

while you can easily assemble on yourself, there is some value in having someone who really knows what they're doing assemble it.

Re: Dream AR15

You are asking a lot. It's tough to get a complete package...a rifle that does it all, however you can get close but it does cost some $$$$. I would build something with good parts and see how you like them. If you don't, replace them. The key is to start somewhere.

I would start with:
*a good barrel for the money (WOA)
*a good trigger (Geissele, Timmney, etc)
*an Eotech (BDR)/Aimpont w/flip to side magnifier (CQB/Longer range)
*Magpul CTR Stock

These are just my thoughts and what I own..

Re: Dream AR15

Sounds like a recce rifle to me. I would start with a dead-nuts reliable platform, and since you don't have a whole lot of building experience (and if you don't have another one to work off of) I'd start with the BCM Recce or the KAC SR-15E3

On this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5oTauZF6Qs at around 4:15, the SBR has 3 optics on it... then merely rotate for cqb.

Re: Dream AR15

Here is my multi purpose rifle setup. Sounds like that is what you are wanting. There was no budget here, I only went with what I knew was proven gear. This gun shoots very accurately.

The barrel is a Brux SS light contour 1x7.5 twist 16 inch 5.56 NATO. It has been cryo'd and DLC coated.

The bolt is a JP enhanced bolt that has been DLC coated. The rest of the bolt carrier group was stripped of it's original mil spec coating and DLC coated. I personally like DLC coating because it goes on at a low temperature and retains oil very well.

The fire control group is an adjustable JP trigger with the speed hammer and adjustable safety. This is an extremely crisp trigger group when set up properly.

The lower receiver has a tension post that is adjustable so movement of the upper receiver is minimized while firing.

JP 15.5" free float tube and quick attach suppressor. All I have to do is take off the SWFA optic and attach the ACOG, detach the suppressor (if necessary), detach the bipod and you are ready for Close Quarters Battle.

You already know to "buy once cry once" .. this was the solution for me.
