Is there any advantage to going with the 338? my shooting range is limited to 600M, unless i take a 2 hour round trip to a different rifle range who offers 1200M

in terms of ammo, 338 comes out to about $2.50 a shot. i have never reloaded precision 7.62 ammo, just 556 and 338. In terms of cost, how much more affordable is 7.62X51? I have a few hundred rounds of once fired LC match brass dates ranging from 70's-90's. i will be sorting those by weight and starting with those if i go with the 7.62 cal conversion.

mostly i am looking for accuracy, so if the 338 out performs 7.62 at 600m or less, then i will opt for 338, if not i will probably stick with 308 for now and pick up the 338 conversion later on when i have access to a longer range.

what do you guys think?

If you're shooting inside of 600m, then .308WIN is plenty fine. The only advantages the .338LM will have over it at that range is that it'll buck the wind much better and clang steel with more auth-ora-tay. Otherwise, .308WIN will be SO much cheaper to shoot and plenty fine at that distance.

In my opinion, unless you will consistently be shooting at distances greater than 1000yds, the .338 would be a waste. For anything inside 1000yds, the .308 will suit your needs for ammo availability in a variety of sizes and for the cost of reloading.

Grab the .30 cal (.308win).

It is much cheaper to shoot, requires no brake to shoot comfortably, is still capable out past 1000 yards and is generally a good calibre to learn on.

You have a DTA so getting a new barrel/bolt is no problem.

Trust me get the .308 it is more versatile.

If you dont mind me asking, are you ordering directly from DTA or going through a dealer. Also which model are you getting?

Thanks,
