For those of you that have used these I sure would appreciate your feedback on how durable this "system" is. I have read numerous reviews that claim that because the die and inserts are made of aluminum that they deform easily and many users have been quite unhappy with the results, especially considering the price (around $220+). Whidden has alot of name recognition and seems to be a respected manufacturer of quality dies, custom & otherwise, I just can't imagine they would produce such a really inferior product that could be damaged so easily?

Not to hijack the thread away from durability.... but I have a performance question about these pointing dies.

Do they produce noticeably better results on target?

I didn't think that a very sharp 'point' was as good as having a hollow tip with a good uniform meplat? Or a sharp point is that not the function of the Whidden dies?

If there is already a thread on pointing that I did not find yet... please let me know!

Thanks and cheers,

Sirhr

You get an incremental benefit in BC from pointing, how much depends on the specific bullet you are using. Higher BC obviously gives you more potential for hits on target. I don't have Litz's book here in front of me but he lists out the % of improvement by several popular bullets. As I recall, it was like 3% for a SMK whereas for a berger hybrid somewhere around 5-6% for example. It isn't a "sharp point" that you get but just a much smaller and more uniform meplat, so yes, to answer your question, it's not the function of the die to make a sharp point. If you have ever seen one of the new Nosler RDF bullets, it's more like that.
