Hey guys,

I am looking for duracoat preping steps. I am wanting to duracoat my barrel and action on my remington 700 sps SA. I am not sure what all I need to tape off and if I need to lightly sand or not. I am totally new to it, so any help is greatly appreciated. Also, would matte black be pretty close to the same color finish that is on a zeiss scope?
Thank you,

Justin

Re: Duracoat preping steps?

The best way is to bead or oxide blast, degrease with acetone, then spray. The flat black would be the closest match to your anodized scope tube. If you don't have a sandblaster available, scuff everything with a green scotch brite pad, degrease, and spray.

Re: Duracoat preping steps?

Clean and degrease with a non residue brake cleaner like crc.
I plug the chamber and cover the breech face with modeling clay.
Blast with 120 grit aluminum oxide at 45 to 50 psi.
Blow off all media and coat using several light even coats.
Let each coat "flash off" or dry a bit before another coat.

Don't beadblast for finishing, it peens the surface and doesn't promote finish adhesion. Aluminum Oxide is far superior for adhesion of the paint.

You can lightly blast the plastic parts as well.
