I have been looking and have not found what i am looking for. Pretty simple question is it ok to get duracoat into the bolt railways? Simple but i cant find the answer? maybe cause its so stupid and i should just know!!

Re: Duracoat ?

you are reducing the bolt to action body clearance. This may be ok in a loose fitting factory action but not recommended for tighter custom actions. I'd suggest only coating the outside of the action and not coating the bolt so as to maintain clearance. On the other hand if you do paint the inside/bolt, then paint will get rubbed off where needed for function as you work/use the bolt. Instead of paint, I plan to have my bolts nitrided: a surface hardening that turns it black. I cerakote the action body, but not the inside raceways.

Re: Duracoat ?

I've used both cerakote and duracoat. On a remington 700 it is ok to put them on the bolt raceway without a problem. I have also put it inside the receiver on other custom actions (McMillan, stiller) you just have to put some oil on it for a bit until it works in. I never put paint on the bolt I just use the np3 finish from robar.

Duracoat in my opinion gets you a better looking finish but it has a ridiculous drying time like 3 months to be fully cured while cerakote is ready to go when it cools from the oven. After the three months though duracoat is every bit as strong.

Re: Duracoat ?

You are right on the cure time and that is what drives me nuts, no oil or lubricant of any kind and no movement of parts. I like to shoot my weapons not let them gather dust.

Re: Duracoat ?

It kinda depends on if you have a reliable heat source to cure the products that require it. I didn't want to use the kitchen oven or set up a oven so I used Duracoat and w..a..i..t..e..d.

Re: Duracoat ?

If I understand this right you guys are saying not to use the weapon for three months so it can cure? How about being very gentle with it?? I was planing on doing mine next week? Now I'm not so sure??
I don't have a oven big enough for the Cerakote process?

Re: Duracoat ?

Both my rifles, Rem 700's, are done with Duracoat and I didn't wait 3 months to use them. I did wait a couple of weeks though. The bolt railways and bolt is painted on both rifles. I little oil on the bolt will do just fine.
Here is a pic as I was getting ready to mount the scope. My daughter just had to help

Re: Duracoat ?

The duracoat will be cured enough to assemble and use the weapon in 24 hours but to fully cure it takes 3 months so they don't recommend heavy use until then

I have assembled my rifles 6 hours after coming out of the oven and have gone out shooting after 24 hours without any problems just be careful with it
