i want to put together a good shooting 243 for deer hunting down here in texas. something that wont break the bank. synthetic for sure, stainless if possible.

for the rifle i was thinking a savage?

not really sure what optics to go with.

what do you guys think?

Re: Economy 243?

Remington M700 BDL in .243Win. Varmint Synthetic maybe? Used would be fine.
Maybe a low magnification USO, S&B or NF? Too pricey?..Fixed 10X SS.
I would stay at or under 12x on your optic.

Or you could go with Savage...

Either way, Im sure you could find something in the FS section.

Re: Economy 243?

What would break your bank? $500? $1,000? $2,000?

Tikka T3s are great and so are Savages. My friend owns a .223 Savage and it is insanely accurate. He reloads 69 grain SMK HPBT bullets with Lake City brass under 24.5 grains of Varget. I shot a .38 group out to 300 yards with it. I couldn't believe it. I don't recall the model but it is a single-shot rifle. I'm thinking a Savage .243 with reloads will shoot just as good. Good luck.

Re: Economy 243?

i'm thinking that i'd like to keep the whole package under $1500.

i don't reload as of this time, that is why i want a .243, because there's lots of factory rounds out there and they aren't crazy expensive.

I'll be the first to call bullshit on this one.

Remington 700 LV SF Light Varmint 243 Win - $860
SWFA SS 3-9x42 Tactical 30mm Riflescope - $600
EGW Base - $40
EGW Rings - $120

$1620 Total

You are correct, Sir.

My friend just sent me this picture of the group. He did the calculations. If it is wrong, then I apologize. I've never converted inches into MOA. It's a 6 shot group out to 300 yards. The upper bullet hole was the seventh shot. Consider it a flier as a result of being too excited.

Re: Economy 243?

Yes, I would definately go with the Savage. I just picked up a Predator Max in .243 and took it out just to play for a bit. I shot several different rounds from her, and she ended up liking the 100gr Federal Power Shocks the best overall. I see LOTS of potential from this one, even from just shooting cheap ol factory stuff.

I was actually just firing some rounds to get the brass fire formed for some recipe cooking. I was pleasantly surprised how much fun it was to shoot. I got the rifle itself for a steal, and have a very low cost optic on it that I am really liking.

I actually bought the BSA Tactical for my .22 rifle, and ended up really liking it... especiall for the price!! $160 delivered. It is holding zero with no issues, and it is tracking true so far, at least to what point I have been testing it.

Shooting .338" 5-shot group @ 50 yards with cheap factory ammo for testing and fire forming brass... I am happy!!

Re: Economy 243?

I two factory rem 700 bdl youth rifles for my kids. As with every other i purchased a one box of every factory load i could find locally. Mine like the hornady 100gr boat tail soft points the best shooting under a half inch at 100 yards all day. Both rifles have Bushnell elite 3-12x40 cost about $150 if i am remembering correctly.
The thing I like the best is how well they did on deer. My kids are good shooters and have killed deer out to 200 yards with the rifles. So far we have not lost a deer shot with these rifles. They most always run after the shot but have good blood trails. My feeling is that it has a lot to do with the soft point bullets. The damage inside the deer in some cased seems more than that of my 308. Total in both rifles i have around $750 each.

This is good to hear... I am planning on picking up one of these and a viper PST 4-16 for my next rifle.
What DBM is that?

Re: Economy 243?

I know you said you are not reloading, might be the time to start thinking about just for the $ saved. Put it this way, for every 20 rnd box of FGMM you buy you could be be shooting 50 rounds reloaded.

Also, remington varmint 243 can be quite accurate.

I dropped mine into pss take off stock, put a scope on it and shot this with three 105 bergers at 1000y, just under 7".

Oh, and thats with the vld jumping, for you fellow reloaders.

I would love a PST 6-24, but it just isn't in my future for quite a while I suspect. The bottom metal is a used CDI unit that I picked up pretty cheap. Otherwise, I would have stayed with the factory Savage bottom metal.

Or if the seventh shot was out there, that's just where it landed and your group was bigger. No reason to make excuses. Its still respectable shooting. I chuckle when I see so many wallet groups and people comment the one out of the circle is a "flier" or they post one good group when there are three or four bad ones on the same target.

I chuckle at the haters. That was the only group I shot with my friend's Savage. That's all it took to convince me that Savage builds accurate rifles. If I measure a 5 shot group by the taking out the sixth shot, which was the lowest one, the group would measure smaller. For some reason the rifle started stringing down away from the initial top 3 shots. And then, unfortunately, I shot the final shot way high. Oh well. Keep on hating.
