I'm concidering getting a 338. I've seen what Shawn Carlock does with the 338 Edge and I like it. What's the difference between the 338 Edge, the 338 Lapua, and the 338 RUM? I am unfamiliar with any of the 338's. Do any have belted brass?

Would it be better or easier to go with a Lapua because of the avaiblity of brass? Or is the Edge better, although brass would need to be opened up?

Re: Edge vs Lapua vs RUM

I think he mistyped there. The edge is a 300 rum necked up to 338. I think the 338 edge is 100 thousanths longer than a 338 RUM, neither are belted. I think the edge may have a very minute capacity advantage.
The 338 lapua brass is so much better than the RUM brass that you can push the lapua faster. Well actually if you only wanted to fire the cases once the Edge is just as fast, if you want more than one firing out of your cases the lapua is faster.

Re: Edge vs Lapua vs RUM

There is no reason to go with the lapua, almost everything for it is more expensive. If you go with the edge you jsut have to get someone to ream and chamber it. And then you have to do some brass work. If you go with the RUM you will lose about 100FPS but it will be cheaped to load and shoot. Its up to you. I went with the RUM but if I had all the money in the world I would have went lapua. Good luck

Re: Edge vs Lapua vs RUM

I'm building another Edge as we speak.

I don't think paying another 2 1/2 times over the Ultra brass for the Lapua brass, for my needs, warrants the 338 Lapua.

For the record, I shoot Lapua in everything I can, but not this time.

Re: Edge vs Lapua vs RUM

The RUM has a rebated rim. The Lapua needs a larger boltface. The only thing cheaper is the brass, but with Lapua 338LM brass giving you 15+ loads-are you really saving that much? Still burning the same amount of powder and the same bullets.

Old argument. RUM poor mans Lapua Magnum....338 Edge is a 300RUM necked up to 338. Does eliminate the need of opening up the 700 bolt face and adding a SAKO or M16 type extractor. Then again-just buy a Remington MLR in 338LM. For a long time there wasn't an affordable off the shelf stick. Now there is.

Making EDGE brass is simple. Run a piece of 300 RUM brass through the expander and viola. You're only increasing the diameter 0.030" so the effort is minimal.

If you're starting from scratch, go with the Lapua. I NEVER thought id say that but, there ya have it. I really love my edge but, Lapua brass does kick ass.

I would recommend at least a 30" barrel and optimally a 32" to safely get you to 2900 fps with the 300 SMK's.

If Norma or Lapua made 300 RUM brass I would say EDGE hands down.

Whats 10 thousanths here or there......oh yea that would be some long headspace possibly leading to case heads seperations and possible civil liability.

I do not have the Edge reamer, but I do have the 338 RUM and 338 LM. I just cannot justify the expense for the reamer for the extra .090 in fact could not even if it were a full .100

I wonder if PTG will regring my 338 reamer to 338 edge? I would almost bet there are some 338 RUMs headspaced +.90 deep running around out there masquarading as 338 Edges.

BTW that is a good looking A5 you have for sale.

Re: Edge vs Lapua vs RUM

Now I'm a little more confused than before.

Pro for the Edge is cheaper brass and regular magnum bolt face.
Pro for the Lapua is better brass.

Both are about 100 fps within each other?

Now with CIP specs, longer magazines-the Lapua is no longer limited by 3.600" C.O.A.L. -so the Lapua holds the advantage.
Again, the brass issue-is a BIG DEAL. Lapua brass is without peer. 338LM has become more popular with factory ammo available in many places it wasn't.

You don't say what the rifle will be used for.

If you already have a magnum action, build an EDGE. If you're starting from scratch, build the Lapua.

Guys on the hide are claiming 2900 fps plus with the Lapua and still retaining excellent brass life. IF, that is true, go Lapua.

Do you plan on using a DBM or using it as a single shot?

I just got a primer pocket swager to try on my Rem brass. I'll report in about a month how it works.

Re: Edge vs Lapua vs RUM

i push the 300smk to 2900 in the EDGE out of a 27" barrel. it is very hard on brass but at 2825-2850 (where the bullet prefers to be shot it seems), i can get 8 loads out of the brass. $80-$90 for 300RUM vs. $250 for lapua brass. unless you are in a position where 338 lapua ammunition is laying on the streets and you need it to survive, there is no other practical reason to go with the lapua. the edge is its equal or better in accuracy and velocity so what is to gain? in reality, the 338RUM will push the 300SMK to the velocity it likes and 338RUM brass is MUCH easier to find and usually cheaper.

Re: Edge vs Lapua vs RUM

I have nothing yet for this build. It would be mostly shooting at paper or steel for fun, no competetions. I would like to do some big game hunting so I don't want a heavy target gun. Probably a bdl style magazine.

Right now I'm leaving toward an Edge.

If I got a factory Rem700 in 300 RUM and shot it for a while, then wanted to jump to the 338 Edge, I can use this as the donor rifle right? I mean the Edge uses the same action and bottom metal right?

Re: Edge vs Lapua vs RUM

You could get a 338 RUM to start with and if you decided that it won't do what you want, punch it out to an EDGE. You'd basically need to run an EDGE reamer in the chamber, make sure it's properly head spaced, and done!

SBH is correct, the 300 SMK's like to be around 2850 (this will vary slightly by your own barrel) so there is really no huge advantage to the idea that "my gun will push the SMK to XXXX velocity". I have no idea where the next accuracy node is for the 300 SMK.

I know this thread is 6 months old, but...

What ever came of this? Did you make a decision? If so, what was it, and briefly why?

I am going through the exact same debate. I want a rifle for ELR target, and also portable capabilities, for hunting.

I'm between a TRG-42 in 338 Lapua, or a Defensive Edge in 338 Edge.
The TRG with all accessories to my door is around $3500.
The Edge fully outfitted is $4450.
