Obviously, having you and your stuff squared away is number 1 and the biggest reason game is lost or suffers longer than it should. Be honest with yourself about your abilities. With that said, magnums are more appropriate for elk in most situations, and some people would try a17 hmr at 400 yards on an elk if it were legal to prove a point.

I mostly hunt bulls with archery gear, but fill the freezers with cow elk every year.

You are a champ man. The ultimate for me would be an elk hunt and here you are doing it every year. Until I get a tag I'll just have to stick to white tail and turkeys
