I finally have all my reloading equipment. Very new to reloading, but I have a dilemma. I have a 1# jug of IMR 4350, which I have read is more suited to medium to light bullets in .300wm. I have and want to load 208gr. Amax's. Should I try to get this combo to shoot accurately, or "scrap" it and buy some H1000? If I try the IMR, do I load several charges and do the ladder test, find the node and then test groups? Or is there another way to find out if this configuration will work. In case it matters here is some more info. Savage FCP-K 24" barrel, Win brass, Wolf primers.

Re: Equipment Acquired

Get 1 pound each of RL22 and H1000. You'll know by the time you get through half of each. Then buy the keg.

Kinda seems to be a Ford vs Chevy, Coke vs Pepsi thing your barrel will prefer one over the other.

Re: Equipment Acquired

Hey bud,

I'm just like you and have no field experience with reloading (I'm working on my own dilemmas myself lol)

But I've done a lot of research for the .30-06 and will be shooting bullets in the same range as you are. My research showed h4350 was the best option for me.

The rl22 recommended here is a compressed load meaning you compress it with the bullet when you seat it. It's also not too tempature stable (climate/temperature changes will affect velocity) but it's a good powder besides that, rl17 is good as well and uses less powder for same effect I think. Check that to be sure.

I was gonna do with h4832, but just some people here said they got more consistent results and better accuracy with the h4350, so I ended going with that. It's also a temp stable powder.

There was a tabletop test of all these powders for temp stability, and ironically rl22 did the best and h4350 was awful. But I'm still going with what the pros said about it.

Again, I'm new to this lo,e you but I did a lot of research for powders and for 30-06 I think rl22 or h4350 is the way to go, or the rl17. I didn't see much ppl use imp stuff.

Take what I have with a grain or 2 of salt

Hope this helps you a bit!

Re: Equipment Acquired

Thanks for the advice, taseal. I just talked on the phone with a guy that a member referred me to. This guy really had my head spinning with his reloading and gun knowledge. He was very helpful as far as brass and barrel care. He also advised me to try the IMR 4350. He said to load 10 rounds at the lowest charge to find zero, and then load in .5 increments (up to around max charge) to find the node(s). I was also advised to use the node at the lower end of the charge spectrum, as it will increase brass and barrel life. If I'm not happy after finding the node, tweaking the charge and shooting groups then I'll try the above mentioned powders. The worst thing that could happen is I get more time behind the trigger, and I waste $40 on bullets. Thanks for the help guys. I'm sure some of you are shaking your heads. After asking for help, I'm doing the opposite of most of the advise. Sorry.

Re: Equipment Acquired

Don't have any exerience with IMR 4350.

My .300 loves H1000 with the 180 class bullets.

It also shoots the 168 grain bullets very well with RL 19.

I have had some decent results with H4350 and 150 grain bullets.
