I have been using an Eva-Dry E-500 and a Goldenrod in my 45 cubic foot gunsafe. I have been tempted to get rid of the Goldenrod (because of some not so positive stories I have read and heard) and just use the Eva-Dry. The E-500 is good for up to 500 cubic feet. It should be more than adequate by itself.
Any opinions appreciated?

Re: Eva-Dry and Goldenrod

I'm anxiouis to hear about problems with the Goldenrod before something bad happens to my gear. I've been using them in my gun safes for about 25 years, and I've never had any rust or corrosion problems, they sure seem to be working so what else can I say? What's the deal?
I don't see a problem in using both the GR and the E500 at the same time.

A rod is crap. In a safe that isn't air tight (few are) it will pull cold moist air from the bottom as the heated air goes out the top. A perfect moisture loop. In a sealed safe (rare) it suspends all the moisture in the air ala rain forest. No doubt, crap, it was meant for clothes in a closet. I'll go one further, your running an electric device in your safe that could burn out, catch fire, overheat. I'll go one further, its the worst thing possible for wood stocks. You were absolutely right to throw it out, one down 10,567 to go!

As to using a desiccant, that is the ONLY way to go and it is done strictly by the numbers. Get a hygrometer and keep it within 45%-55%. Can't get it there? You need more silica. I've tended some remarkable collections of firearms, this is ALL we find in use, nary a rod anywhere. Want to keep it really simple, air condition the room and your almost there.

Re: Eva-Dry and Goldenrod

We had one of the eva-dry models sent to the office for 360 product photography. After we were done with it, i took it home and put it in the gun safe. It has been about the best thing I could have done. I use the safe more for storage then for normal use, so it doesn't get opened for months on end. This little de-humidifier has worked great.
