Ever get bored shooting?

Been a long time since I took my long rifle out - mainly because of weather or some other excuse. Heart has not been into it.

I've actually thought about selling my rifle and gear, but then I know another day I may want to grab the rifle and head out to the range.

Seems like I revolved around various disciplines, pistol, then rifle, semiauto rifle, Karate, Sword....

But of all the shooting, long range is still my fav so I have held onto my high dollar investment...

Think a lot of it is that there are no free and open places to shoot except a ways away and I get tired of making an adventure out of just wanting to go shoot long range. I don't want to have to be in a match to shoot, or necessarily with another person...

Just bored, sitting in a hotel in Seattle wishing I WAS out shooting..

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

Well, I just went through a shooting package that involved about 3000 rounds 556 and about 600 rounds 9mm. That got tiresome after the 3rd day. 2 rounds standing 2 round kneeling and 2 rounds prone gets very old

NO I can not say ever, and I do mean ever have I been bored shooting. But then again unlike many people who own guns I was just about born with one in my hands. I will go shooting as long as there are not 3 foot snow banks outside.

That's funny because I DO get the craving to go shoot when there's 3 foot snow banks out. Most times I go that's when it is, dead of winter..

I was shooting smallbore from age 8 through 18, combat pistol in the Army, Highpower, and F-class might have been but these guys compete over the difference in 1 point so that got old real quick.

Maybe I just need some exploding targets or something LOL

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

I haven't fired a recreation round in over a year. I hit overload early last year when I was still working the firearms training unit. 45 hours a week at the range training others, three days a month on the range receiving training, small scale firearms related business on the side, working the local gun shows and being one of a very few guys on a 1700 person department who gets all the firearms related calls pushed my fun meter into the red.

I'm down to just three days of training a month and my small business now. My interest is starting to rekindle. It needs to, my skills are in the toilet in a big way.

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

Shooting to me is very boring unles you are competeing. As of late I only shoot when there is a match to go to.

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

Somedays I feel like its all been a waste, when shooting doesn't give me the same joy I thought it would. But I think its because of other things that are going on in my life. I used to go shooting alot by myself, but I dont anymore. I think for me at least, if there is nobody to share it with, then its not as fun. When my typical shooting buddies crap out on me, or puss out on the plan, I loose the desire to go. But a few days later, I find myself doping the wind and plotting my shot placement on any given target out there in the distance. Its then that I know why I got hooked on this sickness.

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

I never get bored shooting, but I do find myself sometimes moving away from one concentration toward another (i.e. - long-range precision to IDPA or IDPA to rimfire, etc.). Call it shooting A.D.D. if you will...I don't think its from boredom per se, just shifting attention/focus. That said, the pendulum always swings back to one of several shooting concentrations. I'm never bored with shooting in and of itself.

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

Think we are on the same page.

For me it's a 45 minute drive to any reasonable clear cut or 600 yard range.

Not many people to share it with (Dafar where the heck you at?)..

My buddy in LE just wants to shoot matches, but I'd rather be out in the woods doping wind as well.

So now I'm shooting a long bow, I can walk across the street to shoot it.

Girlfriend enjoys her AR so we take them up to the range with the pistols occasionally.

I know that someday my interest will peak again - I love the long range stuff.

Longbow will be a challenge at 200 yards LOL, at 20 I'm deadly...

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

very got bored, perhaps "complacent" would be a better word, or "routine".

when i start getting that "been there done that", i'll go to the support side exclusively, tends help you remember things you've become "complacent" with, and brings back the relearning of the fundamentals as everything that you have learned over timw is now reversed.

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

I hit a major slump a few years ago. It got so bad I would only shoot less than 10 times a year. This was way down from the 2-3 times a week I would shoot.

I sold off about 2/3 of my collection and sunk the money back into my go-to guns, ammo, targets, etc.

I also started shooting in conditions I would have never considered before. This certainly made things interesting.

Another thing that helped was all of the training I have received in the last few years. I was doing drills I would have never done on my own.

It really boils down to fresh ideas and thinking.

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

NEVER get bored of shooting, partly because I don't get out enough lately, but mainly because going out shooting gets me away from life for a while. Shooting is my release from the stress of life. I don;t compete or anything just a hobby.

I normally shoot by myself at a 200 yard (maximum) range, near Shelton. I love the solitude but I'd like to have more variety in distance than 200.
3-600 yards or better would be fantastic provided there were no Seattle-tude folks running around threatening lawsuits and calling the Sheriff and such....**sigh!**

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

I've got 4,000 178 AMAX and 6,000 168 Nosler J4's languishing in 3 shipping boxes in the garage. I guess it was ~ 2000 or 2001 when GA Precision and SH put up the SH Rem700 rifle and the AR-10 packages that I bought into my wishful 'shooting regimen'.

I bought one of each rifle. But the SH Rem has only had 120 rounds through it, the SH AR-10 has had 2 boxes of Federal Match 168's through it. I have/had an M1A, a Savage 10FP and a Shiloh Sharps that I used to take religiously to the range every Thursday and shoot; it was great therapy.

I didn't realize that it was also very social for me. I always met my friend at the range; he and I had it to ourselves all the time and we took our time and shot for hours at a time. I moved away and built a 200-yd range in my back yard. I've prolly shot less than 200 rounds out of the 6 rifles I own in the 7 1/2 years I've lived here.

Shooting alone just ain't any fun. And my friend was very ill for the last couple years of his life and finally passed on; somehow, it really ain't fun now, but I keep the rifles and all those bullets hoping my interest will come back.

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

When I was younger it was IPSC.. Compensated single stack .45's were the order of the day. Then kids came..I couldn't shoot 3 weekends a month, reload and practice to remain competitive.

Changed gears got into sub guns...Wow they were fun...Then a few suppressed weapons here and there.

Career kicked in..starting relocating frequently to chase that next raise or dream position. Sold the sub guns.. got into hunting again after many years of shooting paper and steel.

Moved to Alaska..sold a few more toys and started hunting and fishing like never before. Killed bears, moose, dall sheep, mountain goats and caught lots of Salmon.

Moved back to Dakotas and started deer hunting again. Then started a passing interest in long range shooting. Had GAP and couple others build me long range sticks.

Learned how to reload with surgical precision for long range. Then moved again and another time. Starting shooting Glock matches and using a shooting coach for long range.

Time, opportunity, and taste have changed a lot over the past 25 years. I am not in my early twenties anymore and I cant run, jump and shoot as fast as I used to. Today I shoot a little slower and can hit things a way out there when I set up and do it right. There is no greater satisfaction than ranging and dialing a target.

When I can't shoot, I wish I could. When I do shoot,I try to slow down, breath, pull slowly and watch for everything in slow motion. The thrill has never left..it has matured over time. My heavy barrel .308 and 1911 still get the job done. Glocks, AR15's,and others provide a pleasant distraction from the day to day pressure and grind at work.

And now my taste is slowly moving towards...30 and 40 year old Smith and Wesson revolvers. They are fun and easy to shoot. My journey is far from over. But the thrill of squeezing the trigger has not changed since my first Daisy bb gun in the early 60's.

And along the way I have taught two sons and a host of others the joy of shooting, hunting and reloading. YMMV

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

I don't know if "bored" is how I would characterize it for myself, but I do go though "phases" of greater and lesser interest in shooting(and all my various hobbies, honestly). I never lose interest conceptually, if you will, but I go through hot/cold spells where I feel like I want/need to shoot all the time...then I will hit a period where I can go weeks(or more) without recreationally touching a gun at all.

Some of this, though, is due to many of the reasons AL noted in his OP - no one to shoot with, no time, too far, etc.

Critical part is that I ALWAYS come back to it though, and usually with as much or more interest than ever, and it rarely takes all that long before the "itch" kicks in again. Been this way for a couple decades!

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

I love shooting but now and again I take a bit of time out to concentrate on other things and hobbies. Being in the UK I consider myself fortunate to have the shooting that I have (as you may be aware UK firearms legislation is pretty strict - each calibre you own has to have its own justification for use) and have access to an excellent private range as well as private land 10 mins from home allowing me to shoot 1200 yards plus. Given what I'm allowed to have I count myself lucky and make the most of it when I can!

Right now I'd give anything to be bored of shooting as currently I'm out of action with a badly broken leg! (as a result of one of my other non-shooting hobbies!)

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

I have learned to force myself to be "bored" when needed. This allows me to shun outside (other people, that fact that you are competing) and inside (anxiety) influences that get in the way of absolute concentration and peak performance.

That said, you do anything long enough and the shine will come off the apple to some degree. That's just the way we humans work. The good news is, once that happens, it creates the opportunity for you to extract other experiences from the activity, even though the early attractors may have been satisfied.

The junior I coach put on the performance of his young life this past weekend at the 3x Air event at the OTC. He was shoulder to shoulder with some of the best rifle shooters in the world for 3 days - and at times he yawned during the match. Pure goodness.

Re: Ever get bored shooting?

Myself I got burnt out shooting Trap and work and money issues all happened about the same time. The classes I was shooting in if you missed one bird out of a hundred you were pracicing and from the 27 you had to shoot a 95 or better to start thinking of getting into the money. For me to stay at that level I had to either be Competitive shooting each weekend or practicing every weekend and to practice Trap you have to got to an established field to practice. I got to the point where I almost wanted to puke when I thought about going out to shoot Trap.

I have always loved Rifle shooting starting with a BB Gun at 6 years old. I am now 50. What's nice for me is that where I live, in 15 min I can be out shooting as far as the Rifle can reach and I can go out by myself and do this.

You have some places down there to shoot as well - SKRanger used to hit some clear cuts up out that way.

PM me and we'll see about a meet up - long range would cure my complacency too!

I'll b e in Shelton Friday night to pick up my daughter..

Well competitively no can do, I can't take it on my shoulder for too long. But for entertainment, it will be fun!

Another fn thing is shooting 22's at 200 to 400 yards - That's always fun and doesn't require two trips to the truck to load gear...LOL
