Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday, since I was a young boy devouring turkey and stuffing like a savage, but it wasn't until I was away from my family for the first time in the Army at age 17 that I came to appreciate the meaning of Thanksgiving. I'm now well past twice that age and deep into my second career, and the importance of Thanksgiving has grown and matured.

Two years ago I moved to New Zealand and while the holidays are a stark reminder that I'm away from family, Thanksgiving is unique in that it is centered around giving thanks amongst different cultures. The nature of the biz is such that there are lots of Americans where I work (along with people from 51 countries) and so during this time of year we put together fantastic turkey feasts for our friends and give thanks.

People are thankful for so many simple, personal things but I find the older I get, the broader and deeper my thanks get. I start to think of my ancestors, think of the Earth, the Sun, the Universe.

Today I think this blog post says it most eloquently.
