Extended ranges with a Target Dot?

I'm overseas right now. I gave my buddy the money to get my new rifle and scope set up. It's a new Savage Model 12 Long range precision, in a .260 REM. The scope is a Leupold 6.5-24, I believe, with a Target Dot reticle. I am sure it will preform.

My 2 questions are:

Does anyone have any experience with these rifles, good or bad?

The main question, Any advise on using a target Dot Reticle at extended distances, to compensate for bullet drop? It's not like I have a Mil Dot that I can use. Some day.

Thanx For the help Ya'll

Re: Extended ranges with a Target Dot?

If the target dot is the only dot in the reticule then i would say yes you are stuck using the elevation and wind adjustments. I would think that one could find the size of the dot for exmple if your tagert dot is .1 mil or 1/8th moa you could use it for very small hold offs. I have an ior with a MP8 dot reticule the dot is .1 MIL and it works great for wind hold offs for the eb and flow of wind.

Re: Extended ranges with a Target Dot?

IOR Valdada is an optics company out of Romania. They make semi-highend scopes for long range shooting. I have one of their scopes on my rifle its a 3-18 power and the reticule has mill hash marks and a center target dot. If you know hoe to use the mil hashes and the dot in the center it makes it very easy to add wind and elevation correction without touching the dials. Most all tatical scope manufacturers have a reticule with either mil/moa dots or hash marks but i think the IOR is one of the very few that uses both at the same time.

Re: Extended ranges with a Target Dot?

His scope is a Leupold VX3 8-25X40 it has turrets and a Target Dot. I believe they are used for BR. I am able to shoot better with this scope then any scope I have used yet. It is going on his 260 and I am starting his load developing tomorrow using 140gr VLD's.

OIR sounds interesting. In time I may experience with other scopes, but for now I will need to get proficient with this one. Thanx South Paw. I couldn't remember exactly what it was. I can't wait I still haven't found any info on the rifle, But I wouldn't have bought it if I wasn't so sure it was gonna do good. Those Coyotes will be shaking in their fur when we hit the grounds.
