I have a R700P 300WM long action. If I load a round and chamber it, I cannot eject the loaded round; it stays chambered, as the extractor is not grabbing the rim. It only works if the gun is fired. Any thoughts?

If the extractor looks OK then check the headspace.

Does the fired case upon rechambering extract OK?

If the chamber is on the long side for headspace and your ammo is on the short side (shoulders pushed back) this can happen as there is enough room for the case to move forward.

Re: extractor not extracting

The case extracts fine after firing. Headspace cannot be an issue, since this is a belted magnum.

My error in not paying attention to the caliber you mentioned but my statement stands - headspace can still be an issue - it just isn't the shoulder - it is the belt. If the chamber was cut too deep, it will do the same thing.

I should have asked if this is new or if the gun used to work fine and just started to be a problem? Is the ammo the same as you used in the past and worked or have you changed? Is it factory or handload?

IF, this is new, then after firing, you are headspacing off the shoulder with the fire formed case and that is why it extracts when you try after firing.

It's just a thought as I have seen it happen - without gun in hand and go gauges, we are all just arm chair quarterbacks.

belted mags head space just like others just at a different location. Instead of the neck they go off the rim. If its too deep then this might explain your troubles. Most likely not your real issue but you never know. I would seek professional help with this it is probably in your best interest.

The extractor could still be the problem. Even the extractor groove itself may be a .002 too shallow.
When fired the case slams into the bolt face, getting past the extraction point, something you cant do by just closing the bolt on a loaded round.

Re: extractor not extracting

I think I would try tweaking the extractor first. It's the cheapest and easiest thing to do and you can do it yourself... if you're careful.
If the extractor on your 300WM is the same as most 700 extractors, it's the weak link in the chain and most likely the problem. Consider having a Sako-style extractor installed if it turns out to be the problem.

Re: extractor not extracting

Something to think about.....

#1 Magnum Headspace..Why do they make headspace guages for Magnums if headspace is NOT an issue? Measure 500rds of new mag brass in any caliber and from different manufacturers and you will find out how consistent that belt really is! My 300Wea in a 700 had 'excess' headspace when new. You need to check the headspace with proper guages.

#2 How do you "tweak" a Remington extractor? If a Remington extractor isn't functioning properly it needs to be replaced, something/somebody ALREADY "tweaked" it, that is why it isn't working

Just my Monday morning quaterbacking and .02 worth. Have a Super Sunday all.

I agree with BR.....not an internet advice fix.

I've already seen some bad stuff mentioned if the magnum 700 extractor is similar to the non-magnums. 700's aren't 1911's and "tweaking" the extractor isn't well advised by most.

Re: extractor not extracting

The round stays chambered for the most part, unless i jiggle it a bit. It looks like the extractor is too small; it may have broke. In any case, I am gonna have it looked at. I am not gonna monkey with it myself.
