Rifle Scopes Eye Relief Question (Opinion)

  • Hi,

So I have been in discussions with other Hoplite Arms members in regards to an optical project we have in the embryo stage and figured it would be better to get more opinions on eye relief.

    So, Question 1:
What do you feel is the minimum eye relief of scope that you need for your shooting style?

    So, Question 2:
If your scope has say 3.5" of eye relief, how much of that are you willing to give up for a clip on type device that provides some different augmented features?

    Sincerely,
    Theis

Not sure Ive ever measured eye relief on a scope. Its always just been what it is and Ive never worried about it.

That said: getting closer may feel weird. I imagine that right in front of my eye giving up an inch would feel like a mile.

reminds me of like an old 3-9 simmons or something and scope fucking yourself cause the thing is such shit

or a friend looking through my atacr and having to back up like 2" and being confused why hes so far from the scope

Honestly, it's not something I've ever thought about. I mount a scope front-back to match the eye relief for that scope with a comfortable position. Would it bother me if I mounted something that took an inch away? I suppose it would depend on whether it was still far enough away that it wouldn't hit me in the face during a shot AND whether it impacted my ability to get a full view. Otherwise, I'm not sure I would care.

I can’t tell you what the distance is but I know when it feels right and for my .308 I think I could give some distance up. That being said I’m much more concerned about scope relief on my long action guns with a “sniper smile” scar to justify it.

So you got me wondering... so I actually measured and played around with moving things about.

To my surprise 1.5"-2.5" from edge of ocular focus ring to occipital bone is definitely my preference on target/PRS style scopes (non-ELR). For me 3.5" is usually the line where it's questionable if I can even mount it on a regular rail or whether I'll need an extended rail or cantilever. With that in mind, drum roll please, my answers are...

1: Around 1" is where the scope feels too close to me and scope bite concerns cross my mind. Move it back to 1.5" and I'm much happier.
2: Pretty much same as answer #1. I'll give up 1"-2" of that 3.5", since 1.5"-2.5" is my happy place fun time safe zone

Caveat - My measurements are from edge of focus ring vs the actual ocular lens and my answers will be different if we're talking a LPVO since I'm likely to mount it in a cantilever mount anyways

I have a bull neck and need about 2.5 inches

I would say loosing .75 of an inch may be plausible depending on what the trade off is.

If were talking high recoil or tactical then loosing that distance may be questionable.

shooting prone i seem to be most comfortable with a 3.5 inch eye relief, i can get by with 3 1/4 inch eye relief.

@THEIS just look at a mk5, to me its perfect
    3.4 inches rings a bell.

    Hi,

Thanks for the personal insight/opinions guys!!

FWIW I am not referring to "clip on" as in the normal sense/type of current products but more along the lines of a "clip on" HUD type of unit that provides instant "data" from spotter to shooter; whether that is firing solution, augmented aiming solution, environmental changes, instructions, love notes, etc etc :)

    Sincerely,
    Theis

Oh...in that case...I can give up two inches for love...like I usually do.
