Wanted query members for feedback on the Failzero/ION Bond bolt/BCG's on performance and value for the cost. Also I have an opportunity to get a batch of bolts/BCG's coated in a coating used in NASCAR. I have seen some coated this way in action and they are slick and wipe with a cloth after 2k plus rounds.

All of these products for me personally are a fix for a problem that does not exist for me since I clean at a min. every 300 rds or so for all my AR's. I cannot bring myself (old USMC training) to run one much more than that without cleaning.

That said I have 2 rifles in for repair that the owners are in the lube it an never clean it camp so I know it is a problem for some

    Thanks in advance

I run one in a Spikes 556 as well as a glock 19(EXO. I notice a slight difference in the spikes, but almost no difference in the glock when shooting. Cleaning on the other hand is easier with the NIBO Coating. But again, like you, my guns very rarely go that long before I clean them. If only I had that problem with my truck!?

I can't say either way, because the price difference is something to consider, but I think it is cool and different, and probably not much more.

I have one of the BCM Ion Bond BCG and it cleanes nice. I am in the camp of lube it and clean it when needed but damn not nearly every three hundred rounds at least 500 and a barrel clean at 1000 with my AR.

I agree if I do have some coated it will be the bolt, bcg and reciever ext. for new builds.

Hard to break myself of not keeping my weapons clean since I am an alumni of Uncle Sams Misguided Children

Whats bad is to be able to point out an issue within self and not care or even try to change something wrong

    DAMN BRAINWASHINGS!!!
On the rifle range I don't clean my rifle all week... in the field I clean it every day.

    Side Note:
On a FPF drill with some team hazing... I mean rushing out in Pendleton I made the following observations while shooting 23 mags w/o cleaning the BCG.

    1. After the SAW went down.... M16 A4 (Burst) up!
    2. WIth 17 magazines stuffed into your mag pouches, cargo pockets, and dump pouch.... Running begins to suck ass.
    3. The Gas tube turns a burnt brownish color... permanently.
    4. Anything the Said Rifle is leaned against burns.
    5. Barrel has a white ashy look to it in daylight.
    6. Receiver becomes so hot that only safe thing to hold with gloves is the magazine.
    7. You begin hating your stingy armory for not giving you a Grip Pod...
    8. Hot brass Hot brass turns to "yeah I think not"
    9. M16's are pretty damn reliable if you dump CLP on it before hand.
    10. I love the fact I blew through almost a Can of 5.56 in less than 5 minutes and it didn't cost me a dime

    11. Police call after a FPF drill blows.
    12. Weapons Maintenance afterwords sucks, and a FailZero bolt would have been a nice thing.

Re: Fail Zero and ION Bond bolts feedback and Interest

Having owned and used Ion Bonded, Diamond Bonded, NiB coated, and chrome BCGs, I have come to the follow conclusions:

    1. Unless you shoot corrosive ammo, they are not worth the extra cost.
    2. Cleaning time remains the same. However shiny(Chrome/NiB/etc), will appear dirtier then a parkerized BCG.
    3. You can't avoid wear. If your BCG has a super hard finish, the upper will wear more instead.
    4. Nothing prevents crud from baking on the bolt tail.

Re: Fail Zero and ION Bond bolts feedback and Interest

My LWRC bolts and carriers are Nickel Boron (fail zero) and they move vastly more smoothly than anything else I've felt. They also clean up quite easily....but I aint no Marine. I've cleaned them a couple of times since I bought them. I think.

I do highly recommend special finish BCGs on 5.45 AR15s. Other then that, I don't feel that they offer enough benefit to be worth it in a price to value ratio. However if you got the money to burn, why not. If your looking for the best bang for your buck, don't bother.

They clean faster so I don't know why yours didn't. Mine runs longer without needing cleaned and always works when needed even after 500 plus rounds. Both work and the cost is something to think about. If you have the cash buy the better BCG. I run both and if starting with a new build I will always go for the Ion Bond BCM Auto BCG. They just work great. The BCM BCG are some of the best anyways.

Re: Fail Zero and ION Bond bolts feedback and Interest

One thing we found in the Arctic at 30 below. A standard phosphate BCG may freeze up in the receiver due to condensation freezing. We could not get a hard-chromed BCG to freeze up. I would expect the fail zero or other ion bond to perform the same as the chrome in this situation.
Probably worthless info for most, since in't not like anyone else is dumb enough to be out blasting when it's 30 below.

I am dumb enough to shoot at -20 with a stainless barrel and never seen an issue with mine

Good to know, because I might be.
