So I got a deal on a 1-7 twist 22 cal barrel for my dad, he wants to put together a 22-250 to shoot the heavier 80-90 gr Eld, berger or SMks For coyotes and steel. keep it more of a LR truck gun. Wondering if others have tried this? I only found one thread from awhile ago and didn’t seem to popular but since everyone is going 223 and the valkayie and things now might be something to try. Want to be in that 3000fps range or a bit more but am wondering if I will need to throat it longer for the heavier bullets or will it work with a standard chamber? Pry will need to tweek the ai mags to feed right with the body taper on the case.

I have 3 fast twist 22-250’s.
They work great. Throat it to the round you will be loading.

I had decent luck feeding out of AI and Magpul 5rd mags in mine. I have seen people suggest that the ten round mags give trouble. I ran much slower powders than I do for the sub 60g bullets.

It'll be a very fun gun it seems like. I agree, you'll probably be better off throating with what you plan to shoot.

I recently picked up a Hawkhill 7T in 22-250 cut for an AIAW. This thing is accurate and fun as hell to shoot. I did some some sporadic issues with the AW mag double feeding. Bought a HRD-Gear Dasher kit and it seems to work better. Only thing is it limits COAL. I shoot 77SMK and the 88ELD-M at over 3,000.

I have one with a 1:8" twist 22" barrel. I found H4350 to work well with 75 grain bullets.

Very good info thanks I was hoping the 88gr eld would work around 3000fps. Did pick up some 75gr to try for some measurements..

26" 1-8 twist 22-250, pushing 80gr ELDs at 3240fps super accurate using H4350.

Ignore the internet herd mentality. A 22-250 with heavy bullets is extremely capable

Pry will need to tweak the ai mags to feed right with the body taper on the case.
I'm almost sure you won't.

I found the 88ELD-M to shoot well at 15 thou off the lands. That puts the COAL too long for the AW mag with HRD-Gear spacer installed. That's the bad; the good is that the HRD follower doesn't lock the bolt back on empty like most of my AW mags do so I can single feed. Even better news is that the 77SMK with 36 grains H4350 in WW brass hit just over 3,100 FPS and produced excellent accuracy out to the 600 yards I've fired them on. They are as close as I have been to shooting any 75 grain bullets. I have a scant few 75 Amax left but won't waste time to work up for a bullet that is no longer available.

It is assembled and has a donor scope at the moment.. Did a bit of shooting with it today and it's not amazing but not bad. Doesn't like my 55gr reloads that well.. tried some 80gr bergers with imr4451 and was bad going to try some h4350 with the 80s and some 90smks soon.

I have 75gr eldms, 80gr bergers and 90gr smks ro try in this.. Never had a fast twist 22 before.. Wish I throated it longer but standard throat will work I think I dont need crazy speed. Just want to be between 3000-3100

75 ELDMs at 3380 fps out of my 1:8 twist 22" barrel Tikka T3X. Both accuracy and ES are plenty good for me.

Right on the lands appeared to work the best (#1 and #5). As I backed up from the lands .020" increments each one of those loads shot worse and worse. #2 is .020” off, #3 is .040 off, #4 is .060” off. So for #5 I went right back into the lands and it did the same thing as #1.

Pretty happy with my fast twist 22-250 but I likely can’t run the 88-90 grainers in my shorty 22” so I will stick with the 75s.

Very nice.. Do you have a standard chamber? Mines is sammi spec but has a pretty short throat... Tried some IMR4451 34 grains shot pretty good but was about 2975 avg sd was higher than I want. Went higher charges numbers came down but brass didnt like it.. On to h4350 I guess and see if I can break 3100

I don’t have my notes with me to tell ya how long I was loading them sorry. I don’t recall the bullets being seated too deep into the case though. It maybe short for 88-90 grainers idk but I am gonna be hard pressed to change from that current load.
