This is for those that do not already know: Federal 215M's are hot. Some powders like retumbo in big magnum cases need a lot of fire to ignite reliably. Especially in cold weather! 300 Norma, 338 Lapua, and 375 Cheytac, to name a few. Hang-fires are the most obvious symptom of a weak primer... but even if ignition is reliable, it may not be consistent enough to provide the kind of accuracy and precision you might be after! Perhaps when the weather dips into the winter, it might not go bang at all!

So, just a public service announcement. Run the correct primer. If you're upwards of 75gr of powder, a CCI-250 might not work with certain powders.

What are your thoughts on the CCI #34 primers? I picked some up (because they were available) to use loading .308 in place of Fed 210... some things I have read claim these are Magnum primers, some say they are the same as Large rifle?
    Thank you for your time,
    DW

My only experience with CCI #34 primers was with a 6.5 Creed igniting H4350 under a 140 ELD. I had to drop a full grain 40.5gn from 41.5gn to maintain the same velocity ( 2820 ).
They were definitely a little hotter than a 210M

If I remember right they were designed for the 300/378 weatherby.
I normally run 215m’s in my 338 edge but I do plan on testing 210m’s in it with N570 just to see what happens.
I rarely shoot below 20-25 Fahrenheit

Haven't tested below freezing temps but I prefer #34 over 215M in 300NM & 338LM. Better ES / SD with H1000 & N570, also harder cup if your pushing things close to max velocity.

A pierced primer or a bad hang fire.
I have done a load development using the no.200 primers. The load is with lapua brass, H1000 83.6 gr of h1000, Barnes lrx bt 265 gr, avg speed of 2747 fps testing with 10 rounds, slowest speed was 2740 fps and fastest was 2766 fps a variation of 26 fps. Ambient temp of approx 90°f.
Here is a pic of a few if the primers. What are your thoughts on how they look?

    CCI-200 in 338LM?

Not a good idea, as evidenced by your massively cratered primers. Could just be your bolt... but either way, there is no point in messing around like this. They invented magnum primers for a reason.
Thank you for your advice. I will switch to magnum primers.
