Gunsmithing Feed cone help

I have a Proof Research 16.5” barrel chambered in 300 BO screwed into a Savage short action. I have tried multiple mags, polishing feed ramp, and numerous other things but consistently have feed issues. It’s a push feed action. The bolt face catches the round and pushes forward. It hits the feed ramp and straight into the face of the barrel just below the chamber.

Has anyone added a feed cone to a bolt action barrel? It seems like it would fix the problem.

A couple of questions:

1. What magazine are you using?
2. What is the overall cartridge length of your ammunition?
3. Are you using an ELD bullet (long bullet point to ogive)?

What you are describing sounds like a long COAL such that the bullet engages the feed ramp early (because of the length) resulting in a low angle in which the tip of the bullet runs into the 6 o'clock position of the breech face. I've run into this with 223 in a Savage action. It's partially because the chamber size of at 223 (and 300 BO) make it less forgiving to the angle of the cartridge as it is being stripped from the magazine feed lips and engaging the feed ramp due to the small chamber size.

Try loading a dummy round with progressively shorter COAL and see if the issue resolves. If it does, you may simply have to load to a slightly shorter COAL or try another bullet with a shorter distance between the bullet tip and ogive. This is also the reason I've not yet seen a 223 that would load reliably from the ejection port.

If this isn't the problem, continue to explore solutions other than machining a feed cone to the breech face - it could result in enough of an unsupported area around the cartridge base where the relief is cut that under pressure the cartridge fails. That would be a dangerous condition.

I have tried mdt, ai, and metal accurate mags. The coal isn’t the issue. It does it with hand loads and factory loads. I’ve got several dummy rounds loaded at different lengths to see if that worked and it didn’t. It seems like that would fix it but it doesn’t

Honestly it seems like if you had full length lips on the mag it would work or a feed cone.

Try the 300blktalk forum. Others have successfully converted a SA Savage to 300 BLK.

You can cut a cone breach. You would need to cut a coned bolt face to match your barel, like a winch mod 70. The angle is critical, 45 works about right. If done right, you can load empty cases without any issues. I have done it on my rem actions and clones. Any gunsmith that has build benchrest rifles will know how to help you.

I had the exact same issue with an AR10 barrel in 6xc. Open up the mag lips at the front of the mag so the cartridge is tilted up more. Fixed my issue.

I am not sure if you are illiterate or retarded. Where in this thread has someone said they won’t feed? I have not seen any threads about savage feeding issues with the 300 BO. I didn’t search to terribly far back either. The other posters have been help. You on the other hand have been an aggravating little shit who just wants to talk shit about something. That is usually the case with people who want to feel important in the wide world of the internet. If you have anything else to add, please just send me a PM.
