I have a 700 bdl in 30-06 that was my go to deer hunting rifle years ago. Since then I have moved on to other rifles and that rifle now just sits. I was thinking about a rifle in .260 and was wondering if my 700 long action would work with the .260 being a short action cartridge? I would assume it would with a .473 diameter also knowing the m24 uses the short action .308 in the long action but I want to make sure.

Next, what am I looking at for bottom metal. I would love to use an aics to keep things simple since I am already famaliar with that chassis but do they make a magazine that will work with a long action using a short action cartridge such as a .260?

I know there are probably better options than what I am dreaming up here but this particular rifle just sits, I have not shot it in over 15 years and it was my first rifle my father bought for me when I was a kid so I would like to hang onto it. Thanks for any help.

If it has sentimental value my vote goes toward leaving it be, but yeah you can use short action rounds in a long action, as long as bolt face is right. You should be able to use the 300wm mags with tweaked feed lips (like you'd do to run 30-06 in 300wm mags) but somebody posted just the other day with pics of a chassis (maybe AICS) for just such an animal (long action with 308 mag well).

Good luck
