Been lurking on here for a while and have never posted much even after I signed up because I was always here to learn rather than to spout off about things...

But now I can spout off, because I just joined the cool guys club, I just stuck my whole head in the kool-aid jug just to get the full effect... That's Right, I just bought a Remmington 700 in .308. Now I can truly appreciate what it is to take a can of paint - or 3 - to a perfectly good rifle. I can have the utter bliss that comes with having 700 different choices of stock to choose from - the guy at the shop told me that that's where they came up with the name 700... it was the stocks.

I would have pix, but the gubberment thinks I need to wait and cool down before I get to take ownership. Nevermind that I traded a .308 bolt gun in on a .308 bolt gun... they just want to make sure that I only have love in my heart, and I understand. The extra day of continued life that those official NRA paper target centers are enjoying is worth every moment of the wait.

Forgive me I digress. So, who wants to teach me the secret handshake? Do I get my decoder ring automatically or do I have to submit pictures of the bill of sale? I am soooo excited...

Loc: Central Illinois

Ha, I always look at the LOC field under users names/avatars when I see that crap - it's a guessing game, todays guess was "Canada or New Zealand" and look at your Loc Field - think it would be easier in Canada.

I feel for you guys in Illinois...

Re: Finally joined the cool crowd

There's a 10 day waiting period for the membership card, once you've owned the membership card you can apply for a conditional possession of the decoder ring. This requires a $200 tax stamp to be preapproved for the specific decoder ring that you want.

You need to pay for the decoder ring up front and then submit your Form DCR82-11sT and wait for approximately 9-16 months.

Once you have the DCR approved paperwork in hand you can now go back to the decoder ring dealer and they will do an official transfer to you, of your property, which has been paid for now months ago...

THEN you are officially in the club ;-)

Welcome aboard

Re: Finally joined the cool crowd

I'm also a 700 .308 guy, it keeps me busy and interested, it will for a long time before I have to get something else.

The peoples repuublik of illinois doesent allow it's subjects to partake of anything requiring a tax stamp... unless of course you are a millionare or publik official...and I am neither. So I guess no decoder ring for me

I am the same barrysuperhawk from pretty much everywhere you see me, 458, arfcom, nesba, yahoo, I use that everywhere.

I am in Springpatch and go to LH, and PASA. I'm the guy that runs the 3 gun matches at LH.

Yeah, I am thinking of spending $$ on it. The first issue is that the previous owner turned the muzzle down to what is apparently the standard thread for an AR-15 and put a JP brake on it. The problem is that is without any type of crush/peel/lock washer, and it doesent seem to index properly. Don't get me wrong, I LIKE the JP brake, and the crown seems ok. If I turn it on TIGHT, it clocks slightly high on the right side, which may be advantageous, I don't know, but looks goofy... It also doesent match the BBL profile. So maybe I am in the market for a brake.

I think I am also in the market for some manner of detachable box magazine, mostly because I hate fumbling rounds in through the top..

Last, I think the big bolt handles look cool too.

Re: Finally joined the cool crowd

Some pix before my camera battery died:

Left side the brake, right side a .223 JP brake from an AR. Note the difference in the thredded part:

nice threads

Crown looks good - ignore the dirt, it needs cleaned

Heh, if that is my option, then this rifle is getting sold and I will buy something else... I have very bad luck with gunsmiths, categorically, so it's either DIY or DDIAA [or sell the damn thing, of course.]

Anyway, I may look into getting a thread protector for this, but overall I like the fact that I have the option of adding a brake, and I REALLY like the way the JP works...
