I live in Montana so open spaces is not something we are lacking.

The range I am a member at has a 300 yard max range. I am interested in shooting at 300+ and eventually stretch the legs of my rifles to 1000. But I would be cool with 500 and 600 to learn on. I placed a order for some AR500 gongs that will be very easy to set up.

If you don't own land to shoot on what is the best way to find a place to set up a temporary range? Should I just try and find a good piece of public land to go shoot at? Or should I try to search out a rancher or farmer willing to let me use some land to do this? I would pay or help them with farm/ranch work. Our family farm is 300+miles away so it is not a day trip option. I also thought about putting a add in Craigslist or something like that locally.

    Looking for some ideas.

In California, we have BLM land that you can shoot on. Have you tried posting in the member link up section? You can probably find people reasonably close who will open up their land for you or share or a spot they shoot at. I say avoid craigslist, I see you setting up a meeting and getting robbed (also related to California!)

I usually just go out on public land (BLM) when I don't go to the range. I try to go at least 5 miles away from any homes or ranches in any direction and look for a good backstop or steep hill to shoot into.
