I am entirely metallurgically inept, so apologies for what might be a stupid question.

I've got a Bighorn Origin on order, which I'm going to pair with a PVA stainless prefit. I'm not a huge fan of black actions and stainless barrels, so what would be the best way to refinish the chromoly action to closer match the barrel?

It would make more sense to paint the barrel if you are that anal. PVA offers graphite cerakote that comes close to matching the DLC on the Bighorn receiver. Not sure if the DLC can be etched enough to hold cerakote.

Copy that, I figured that'd be the case. I've heard rumors of heat retention on coated barrels, any truth to this? If so I'll just deal with having opposing finishes, no biggie!

The origin is nitrided i believe.

So to directly answer your original question: You could always polish the action down to the bare steel, which is not advisable since your action is made of chromoly steel. So some sort of coating would be your best bet. But being that anal retentive guy as well, my best advice for you is pick an action/ stock that looks good w/ stainless steel raw barrels in the future, because waiting for someone to paint my stuff is for the birds.

Just finished a build for a customer on an Origin - the bolt is DLC, but the action is melonited IIRC. I explained that to my customer, and recommended he have me use graphite black CK on the bbl, which he agreed with. I went a little heavier on the hardener when I mixed the CK; it isn't a perfect match for the melonited action, but it's close enough to look good.
