I was at my local honey hole today.

Joe has a full squads worth of Finnish M39(?) service rifles, nice tiger stripe birch stocks with the finger jointed front sections.

In addition he had three interesting Finnish Moisins

Two are target rifles. They are captured Moisins but in addition to the military sight they have a rear peep and a Finnish front inside the Soviet front sight ears.

The third is another Moison is similar to the two target rifles but this one has a scope mount attached to the receiver. It was a Finnish mil sniper up unto fairly recently I guess. No scope with it and I wouldn't know what scope went with it.

The target rifles and the sniper rifles have stocks very similar to the IDF Mauser M-66 P that Buffalo posted just a few posts down.

If anyone is interested in some Finn gun Ill try to assist but much better if you call Joe at the Pack and Post (978-368-3326) and make your inquiries.

Edit - the other number is the fax number. If you want to talk to him concerning these 978-368-0910 is the land line.

He got me today. I just tried to call and tell him to hold something else for me but right now the number is going to his fax so I sent him a fax to hold what caught my eye......

Cool. The hell is a Moisin/Moison though?

Its my ebonic spelling of mosin nagant.

I prefer names like Springfield, Garand, Remington, Colt......those mixed foreign Belgian words mess me up.

Thats a Finnish M28-76. There were a bunch imported several years ago. I have one that really was a sniper. It has a scope base, some type of plastic bedding, and a special match trigger. I had to make a custom mount for the base...original scopes and bases run over $1000.

Here is the scope and base

The Mosin action still continues to be the basis of several country's sniper rifles. Here is Finland's current sniper the TKIV-85 [IMG2=JSON]{"data-align":"none","data-size":"full","src":"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/1YeaNJsl.jpg"}[/IMG2]

The 6.5x54R Vostok biathlon rifle looks super interesting. Wish I could find a photo but unfortunately thats a no go. Soviet biathlon shooters did quite well with them in (IIRC) '76 games.

In 1976, the rules changed in Biathlon to where you had to use a rimfire rifle of 5.6mm or below. Here is a pic of the Vostok 6.5x54R Biathlon gun

Here are some pics of my wife and mine's Biathlon guns. The Anschutz is mine and the Krico 360 SII grip activated is hers. We are training for a summer Biathlon right now.

Olympic shooting used to be a contest of military men/arms predominantly competed in by military personnel.

I kind of like the idea of that.

I guess there is benefit to the new concept though as the lighter caliber and open arena introduce firearms to a broader portion of the population.

More shooters equal more 2A support.

True it introduces more people to it, but on the flip side they also did away with centerfire 300m shooting which is hugely disappointing. Those Eurosexuals know how to build a target rifle, I know that much.

Buffalowinter, any chance you can find a pic of the Mosin mentioned in this thread? .300 Win Mag used in Finn sniper comps?

Can't find any pics, but there isn't too much special you have to do to re-chamber a Mosin to .300 win mag.

buffalowinter when the Finns rebarrelled their Mosins into M39s, M28/30s, etc.. were they all rebarrelled with Finnish produced barrels or did they get them where they could? And was Sako using hammer forging yet?

Finland acquired new Mosin barrels from several foreign manufacturers:
SIG from Switzerland, Böhler Stahl consortium of smaller manufacturers from Germany and Belgian barrel blanks.

The Finnish manufacturers were SAKO, Tikkakoski, VKT and Suomen Ampumatarviketehdas (SAT, only few hundred barrels made.) Also the Weapons Depot 1 (AV1) made "new" barrels by relining old ones using Salerno method.

Any idea how the barrels were made? Cut rifled, hammer forged, etc? Thank you sir.

I'm far from a specialist in barrel making, but this photo from Finnish Army archive shows rifle barrel making at Sako factory; cut rifling, maybe?

    Nice pics above!!

Wish I'd have bought those M28/76's back when they were $250....I'd love to get hold of a stock to duplicate, but they seemed to be very susceptible to cracked wrists, a design fault IMO though they are as ergonomic as they are gorgeous to look at.

The 6.5 x 54r is on my "gotta build one" list...

Discussed here before, the MN gets it's poor street rep for many undeserved reasons. Those of us that build custom guns on the actions know they're as capable as any modern off-the-shelf action, the Finns understood well that a quality barrel and well-fitted wood would enable them to shoot to potential.

IMHO, the floating bolthead design (many decades ahead of Savage) is one factor that contributes to this. Completing customs now in .44 Mag, as well as several in .308 x 54r for the handloaders as well as a few in the more boring (lol) 7.62 x 54r. Many seem to be incredulous that these will shoot 1/2-3/4 MOA...
