Firearms through LaGuardia Airport

I'm going to shoot a competition in Sept and it will be necessary for me to travel to & from NY LaGuardia with my bolt rifle and STI pistol (long story involving a work related matter).

Anyway, I've heard so many bad/disturbing things about NY and firearms that I wanted to see if anyone has has had experience, good or bad, traveling through LaGuardia and checking and recovering firearms.

I'm not staying in NY, but will be going up to CT for work.

Mailing them is probably the best bet when it comes to anti gun states. There was a guy who was arrested (never charged and released after a couple days) in NJ because he had hollow points in his possession. He had to claim his baggage for the night due to an unscheduled lay over and stay in an airport hotel. Next day when he went to check his baggage they nailed him for possessing them in NJ. It took him several years to get his guns back and they never gave him the ammo back. To much unknown red tape in some states that will get you in hot water for things you could never even think about.
