Got me my first AR!!

f8d39362.jpg

Sorry for the crappy Iphone picture.

Paid $600 for it. DPMS A3 20", A2 stock grip and fsp. Not sure on the trigger but it ain't bad. CAA carry handle. Unknown manufactured 30 round magazine.

Got 40 rounds of Winchester 55 grain FMJ to go and have some fun this comeing weekend.

Is there anything specific about this rifle that I need to know about? When I lube it, where are the main places to do so and what is some good quality lubricant?

On the carry handle, what are the increments in, I'm used to a scope so these are kinda confusing when they don't even have markings on them.

Anything else I need to know, and yes I know I need some P-Mags.

Is there any way to attach a Harris bipod to the handguard of this rifle?

I'm gonna try to keep this as stock as possible to learn off of.

*EDIT* Is there any way to attach a small picatinny rail mount on this handguard?

Thanks, and please suggest anything,
P.B.Walsh

Re: First AR!! Got some questions

dont bother with a rail on the handguard it just looks and feels goofy as hell....just enjoy the hell out of it, and if you want a flat top...buy a second upper, the world is full of them...

Re: First AR!! Got some questions

Yes that is the kind of rail I am looking for, but how do you install?

I cannot affor a new stock and do not have the desire to change.

I did not recive a manual with the rifle, just a whole lot of happiness!!

What is the maximum length of a round that I can put in the magazine? I measured 2.25", but the 55 grain FMJ measures at 2.25", and I know that it can run better bullets from post on here.

Thanks,

Re: First AR!! Got some questions

You do not need P-mags, unless of course you want them. I've still got the old followers in several of my old metal ones and don't have any issues.

Harris makes a small sling swivel bi-pod mount that goes on the handgaurd.

A wild guess on the adjustments I would say 1/2 MOA

Have fun.

Re: First AR!! Got some questions

Standard battle sights are 1/2 MOA windage and 1 MOA elevation, just like they were dating back to the M1 Garand.

Lubing - pull the bolt and carrier out of it. Look at where the parkerizing is worn away on both. That is where a small smear of oil goes. Leave the rest dry. A drop goes on the gas rings and on the camming pin where it rides in the carrier.

Re: First AR!! Got some questions

I'm talking about the taped on cheek pad on the stock.

If you get a rail for the top or bottom it will bolt through the holes in the handguard. If you want it on the side you will have to drill a hole for the bolt.

Re: First AR!! Got some questions

Ok, I don't really need the rails any way, just add weight.

As for the magazine, it just seems flimsy and rattles alot.

I'll have to get out and play with the sights.

Thanks for telling me how to clean, is there anywhere else that I need to worry about, I thought you had to oil the gas block under the front sight tower.

I still don't get what you mean with the cheek pad.

Thanks,

Re: First AR!! Got some questions

There's nothing under the front sight to oil. And I wouldn't worry about over all length of the round unless your reloading. The twist rate will determine your heaviest bullet anyway. I bet you have a 1 in 9?

Re: First AR!! Got some questions

Yea, I'm pretty sure that it's a 1-9" twist so I can only go up to 69 grains (according to Kreiger). I do intend to reload later this year so I do need to know about the magazine length.

Thanks,

Re: First AR!! Got some questions

O.K. here is some info. From my Sierra reload book 40 grain bullets C.O.A.L is 2.125"-2.250". 55 grain FMJBT is 2.250". 69 grain is 2.260". 77 grain is 2.260". 80 grain 2.550"

I tested several mags and those inside measurements were 2.280"-2.310".

As a side note when you start reloading don't try to chase the lands unless you want to single load.

Re: First AR!! Got some questions

Thanks, just what I was looking for, CANNOT wait to take it (hopefully) to the range this weekend. I'm not sure how good the groups will be though I'm hopeing to manage at least 3MOA (first time out to a hundered with irons). Figured out the sights from the DPMS link.

A little bit of redneck engerniring and I mounted a Surefire via tape just to see if I like the idea, really do, might just have to invest in a setup for such. Went through "clearing" my house just to see what all the fuss is about with 20" barrels being to long (don't worry, I did a safe check) and I tell you that it ain't easy with a 20" and very noobish skills!! Had fun though.....

Anyways, I am very excited about this new rifle and cannot wait to test it out on deer next season with corrct bullets and head/neck shots if I can shot a 1MOA group at 100 to deem myself "worthy". And just incase I fail, I got a .308 bolt gun for my main rifle.

This should be a fun rifle.

Thanks,
