In the fall I got the bug to build a nice bolt action rifle for target shooting.
After the standard questions and debate on rifle and caliber I decided on a base.
Chose the Remington 700 AAC-SD with a 20" barrel in .308
My primary range is only out to 200/300 yards, but I wanted something I could "grow into"
Had thought about set ups from 16.5-28"
One thing I kept in mind was value, more so then budget. While I knew I couldn't do what I wanted for $350 all in, I also didn't want to start with a $3000 custom build.
Once the rifle was in a TPS 20moa base was installed and topped with an SWFA 10 power scope.
I bought the scope package sell. Basically if you buy the MOA scope with the side focus you got a set of rings, flip covers and a sun shade free. I see now that the package is NLA.
In the listing the rings are shown as the med height, but swfa sent the low ones....maybe because they knew it was going on a 700? Either way I was thrilled because the scope sits nice and low.
Because I can't help myself some times I put an AAC single chamber brake and a US optics cant level on the rifle.
Left it in the houge stock for now, didn't really see what all the Internet hate was about. Stock feels nice in hand, and the barrel remains floated when on a bipod. Yes if you really press on it the for end will touch the barrel, but I figured it was not the limiting factor right now for me.
Also put a Harris swivel 6-9 bipod.
Took it to the range over the weekend and was thrilled.
Used LC "m80" ammo! think its 147 or 149gr.
At 50 yards I was drilling rounds through almost the same hole.
Then bumped it to 100 yards and was equally impressed.
Didn't get to scientific on the exact performance, and I'm also still learning, but I am very happy.
I would have thought that since the holes where so close at 50 that they would be within an inch at 100, but I was shooting about 2-3in. Every now and again I would get two shots right on top of each other.
That said I was not strict on how long I waiting between each shot, or anything.
Mostly just trying out the rifle.
Put about 50 rounds through it.
Plan is to get a bit more exact each time I go.
I also have some match ammo I will try out too.
