Hi everyone,

I recently bought an old 8mm gew98 with marking and all.
That's my first center rifle, and I want to start shooting seriously.

Now, im looking for something that wont cost a fortune to shoot ----> .223

Im a poor student now and I need a low budget rifle that would help me become a good shot. I saw a nice stevens 200 with a pine ridge(cabelas)scope 6-18 and boyd stock (sub-moa)

For 600$

That price is in my range and it seem like a good deal...

Well, what I want to know is if this package is a good idea to start target shooting and if not, what are my other option ?

Thanks and forgive my grammtacial errors and my long post !

Re: First entry rifle - stevens 200

Being a poor college student I shoot a .223AI Savage. It took me 4 years to put a good stock on it but I seem to do alright when I shoot 600 yard F class. .223 is nice cause bullets and powder are relatively cheap if you reload. Shoot something cheap, shoot often that will be the best learning tool.

300 for the rifle
92 for the stock
100 for the scope

That comes to 492 for the everything but the rings and base and I don't think they put 100 bucks into the base and rings.

Re: First entry rifle - stevens 200

I believe Stevens are only about $330 new so I couldn't justify spending $600 for one with a Cabelas scope that only cost $180. I would buy the gun new, and possibly in 243 instead of 223, not much more expensive to shoot and way better ballistics. Then you could at least buy something a little more decent for the scope. maybe a SS 10x42 for $299 or a Bushnell 3200 in the $230-$300 range depending on magnification. Also check out Nikons. You won't get quite as much magnification out of these scopes for the price you want to stay in but the clarity and overall quality difference of one of these over the Cabelas scope will far out weight that.

Well, new with ring base and nikon prostaff = 700$ +
It's so bad to be poor, hopefully will receive a stimulus package soon

Yes true, I would wait to save a few extra bucks. I'm in college too I know it's hard to find extra money, but in the long run you will save yourself a lot of money becaues you won't want to change stuff around. I'd wait till you can have around a $1,000 budget. Get that same gun, just focus on good optics, You can go cheap with an EGW 20MOA Base and some Burris Tactical rings. Then get a Falcon Manace 4-14 or 5-25x56 scope. That's just my suggestion from one student to another. Hope it works out for you. That combo would actually be like $900-$950.
