I have talked myself into shooting the LA State Championship FClass prone competition. I have never shot in a F Class competition and was looking for some pointers. What equipment do I need to take, and what is a good scope magnification? This will be a good excuse to go get a new Nightforce. Thanks in advance for your input.

Re: First F class need pointers.

Good deal. You will have fun. Other than your rifle/scope, just bring a shooting mat, chair and a spotting scope if you have one.

As for the scope, anything above 20 power should be more than enough. There are many that will tell you that a 42x NF is required, but a 25x topend really is plenty enough. If the scope is to be used only for square-range KD shooting, a variable with as much magnification as you can handle or a fixed power in the 32x power range gets my vote. If the rig is to be used for anything else, a variable with a lower mag range is probably advisable.

Of course, this is coming from a nobody that thinks a FFP scope can be used to make precision shots.

Re: First F class need pointers.

What do you guys think about open vs ftr? As for rifles I could use one of
Rem 5R 223
Rem 700 in 300WM built by kelbley with a 30" barrel
GA Precision Crusader in 308
Rem 700 that has been accurized in 22-250
DPMS SASS in 308

Depending on twist rate (1-8 or faster) may be a viable option for mid-range (300-600yd) matches.

Would work, but remember - no brakes, and you'll be running in the 'deep' end with the sharks and full-on built F-O rigs - the differential between a custom hunting/tactical rig in F/O calibers and a purpose-built F/O competition rig is a lot bigger than that between a custom .308 tac rifle and a dedicated F/TR rifle.

Solid choice, probably the best option listed here.

Likely doesn't have a fast enough twist rate to run the heavy bullets to make it viable, plus hard on barrels under match conditions. It may drive tacks @ 100-200... but we don't shoot @ 100-200. You need to be able to push a bullet with a BC higher than that of a wiffle ball at reasonable velocities.

Don't bother unless you want to try it just because.

I shoot a .223 but it's a 1:6.5 twist with 30" barrel. I agree on the GAP probably being the best choice.
Look forward to seeing you!

Well said.

Re: First F class need pointers.

CaptRob you will have a blast. Palo Alto is a great range with even better people.

As far as your gun options, I would probably lean toward the GAP 308. Rick's advice is dead on as far as the gun options you listed. And Rick is a dyed in the wool 223 shooter.

I have a Sinclair F-class bipod that you are welcome to use if you would like. I will be shooting in the Open class and won't be using it that day. Just PM me
