USA plays Ghana today at 2:30 PT . . . hoping they get those three points! Ghana have been a thorn in our side for the last two Cups; maybe third Cup's the charm.

Edit: Vengeance!

A lot of dirty play. Ghana got desperate early — it looked like a stick-less hockey game. I'm glad that we won, glad that we got something back for the issues that we've had playing them, now if we could only get canes and guide dogs for the team of bozos who worked that match.

Ghana outplayed the U.S. for the majority of the game and quite frankly we got lucky. If we sit back and continually give the ball back to Portugal in our third of the field as we did to Ghana we are going to get slaughtered on Sunday.

Did anybody see Germany-Portugal to get a good sense of the depth of the Portuguese team?

It's really hard to know how any team is going to do. Portugal had the heat get to them. By the second half they were slow and cramping. Same thing looked to be happening to the USA. Actually its happened in a lot of games.

With that said Portugal didnt look all that great. Couple good chances bit Germany had control of the game most of the time

That game was like watching a college team against a pro team. Portugal was not ready for that match-up and Ronaldo was more or less a no show as the German team marked every player and shut them down. Its hard to read the depth of Portugal as they seem to get mad after the first goal and basically shut down after the second and then the rest of the game was just a clinic conducted by Germany. I will be at the in-laws on Sunday (they are all born and raised in Portugal and now live here in CA) against me cheering for the USA. I still think USA will not win this one unless they play much better than they did against Ghana.

That may light your fire, V, but Ill go with this model....The one on the right, at least.

Apparently I'm not the only one appalled at the officiating this time around:

Mexico?s disallowed goals add to World Cup?s incompetent officiating | Amy Lawrence | Football | The Guardian

Dive, poor officiating get 2014 World Cup off to a bad start | ProSoccerTalk

I just indulged myself in watching Japan-Greece ... wow, yet more hacking (mostly on the part of Greece) and rotten officiating. It went well, well beyond being a physical game.

The officiating has been pretty bad. What's really surprised me in that regard are the late calls resulting from what seems like a combination of diving, hand raising, and crowd groans. Also, seemed like the play on/advantage call hardly exists anymore.

I'm getting the tiniest hint that the officiating smacks of some sort of "reparations politics," that the nations of lesser influence and power are benefiting from the tilt. What I love about the Cup is that it's 11 guys a side from the qualifiers, and it doesn't matter where you're from. One ball, four piles of rocks, and you have a game. Anybody can afford that, in principle, which is what tends to level the playing field. Otherwise, with the interference of bent refs, it's BS.

And if your really poor you can substitute a goats bladder for a ball.

Ridiculous lapse . . . but a good game.

I see the ref tacked on an additional minute of overtime because our player took too long getting off the field on the sub. Came back to bite us in the ass.
