First round flyer?

Looking for information to identify what the causes of this might be. I have a Remington ltr purchased used but in overall great shape when I purchased it. So I have no idea of the round count. I am consistently getting a first round flyer of approximately one half inch from the consecutive shots at 100 yards. Rounds two and on are generally touching each other when I am having a good day. The first round seems to always but at about eleven o'clock to the rest of the group. So what are the main causes of a first round flyer on a bolt gun? I understand this in a semi auto but not with this rifle.

Re: First round flyer?

Run a search for "cold bore shot" and you'll uncover a vast encyclopedia of information.

The short and sweet of it...it happens, is common and nothing to be concerned about. Record your data (sounds like you already have) and keep that in mind when squeezing off the first round with a "cold bore".

Not trying to be smart here - MAIN CAUSE - the shooter.

Dry fire (and make them count like your life depended on them) at least 15 to 20 times before you load a round.

Re: First round flyer?

Are you shooting with a clean bore? The barrel needs to be fouled with a few shots before things settle down. So, if you clean after every firing and expect the first shot to go where subsequent shots go, that is definitely not going to happen.

Re: First round flyer?

With some rifles, even reloading your mag is enough time to cause the first round to be a flyer. I usually have a spot on my target where I fire the cold bore shot. Then I fire the first round before each group at that spot also. Some may call it a waste of ammo. But when you're firing for tenths or even hundredths of an inch, it's worth it to me.
