The club I joined where I live has a 100, 200 and 300/600 range. You have to exhibit that you know what you are doing to shoot on the 600 range..I guess I did because I made it on the paper

Unfortunately I was so surprised I did not take any pictures but I am now in AWE of you guys that have these incredible groups at 600+ ranges.

300 was cool my groups were MOA at least...600 was a whole different game, the wind was at our back at about 8-12mph temp @ 62 degree's great day but man I have a lot to learn to shoot consistently at 600..my groups were anywhere from 7-11 inches.

My setup

AR10T (18 inch barrel)
SS 10x42
I was using cheapo 145gr privi Partizan

Shooting from the prone with a Harris bipod.

My only concern was getting my parallax adjustment right, I read a few references on here and it seemed ok, but at 600 I could really tell when I was not back in the SAME position to shoot.

Looking forward to learning more at the range and more reading here...

Once again for you guys that do this without sweat...I'm impressed..

There's a correlation there. When you step up to match grade ammmo, you should see a dramatic improvement.

Re: First Time @ 600 Yards

You definitely need match ammo or to reload. Once you do, you can really test yourself and your gun. That cheap stuff isn't consistent at all. We were shooting that same stuff out of an AR10 this weekend and they were 2" groups or so. With reloads or match ammo they are 3/4 MOA guns. BIG difference. Get you some good ammo and enjoy, the better you get the further you'll want to stretch it out.

Re: First Time @ 600 Yards

You had me at privi. Actually, you did really well considering your ammo was not up to the task. Try some match ammo as everyone is suggesting, and you'll be amazed at what you are capable of.

Re: First Time @ 600 Yards

I shot my first 'past 300' shooting on Range 15 (600yd) at Fort Dix. I was using FGMM 168gr in my DCM Garand. It was a total hoot.

Handloads or higher quality commercial ammo will make the experience a lot more worthwhile.

Totally different ball game at distances like that, especially when the wind jumps around a lot.

Its good, and it forces you to learn.

If theres no wind its not too difficult.

Match ammo performs much better and you will be suprised at how well it shoots compared to the cheap stuff.

I tell you what tho, for "cheap" ammo its actually not too bad that you hit the 12" target at 600 yards. I would expect to see alot more vertical dispersion compared to what I can see on your target.

Re: First Time @ 600 Yards

Congrats... and get ready to spend some money. This shit is addictive. Handloads are the way to go, initial startup is a good size pill to swallow, but if you plan on shooting often this would save you some money. If not, Fed Match 168 is $18.95 rightnow at Glen'soutdoors.com. Good stuff.
