I've heard a lot about anneealing brass round the site, so I thought I'd give it a try. Of course I tried it out with the cheapest .223 brass that I could find

I figured it would be more cost effective to mess up on them rather than my .338 Lapua brass....

Re: First Time Annealing

I would use just a touch less heat like SITD said, the length of color change on the body of the case is about double what I shoot for. Otherwise things look reasonable from what I see in the picture. A better pic might be in store next time if you can, but I don't see anything to warn you away from shooting these cases.

I'll try to have them in the heat less next time..... </div></div>

You're very welcome. I spent countless hours perfecting my technique. So I know what's it's like when you first start out and you're on the right track. I also use propane and a deep socket but I use two torches and while I did turn them in a drill I stopped after the addition on the second torch (much faster and easier).

Re: First Time Annealing

Yeh the difference in time with two torces so much easier.

They look okay to me. As long as they didnt hit that cherry red glow your ok.

Your after that slight change to the surface when the metal color picks up a slight blue... i then immediately drop them in water

Some guy even use a pan with water to anneal. This technique is safe for starters because it somewhat protects the web of the case and usually worst case scenario is the neck is annealed too much and the brass grows easily and/or collapses. If this is done without water chances are its a dangerous scenario.

I use the pan with water method on large more expensive stuff.
