So, I got myself a Rem 700 LTR in .308 w/ 20" barrel a few months ago. I have put 100 or so rounds down range at 100 yards. I have the rifle nicely zeroed at this distance.

There is match at my club Saturday, a 300 yard match, and I have been invited to join in. I figured, "Heck, might as well jump in the deep end. Even if I come in last, I will still have fun and learn lots."

I will not have a chance to shoot at 300 yards before the match though. So, although I plan to reseach and calculate this later, I would like advice from the experts on this forum to help me be close on my first shot. And to help make sure my answer matches what you recommend.

With the rifle above, and a Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20 LR/T w/ 1/4 MOA clicks and Hornady 168g BTHP Match ammo, how many clicks do I need to come up?

And if there are any other tips for my first match, I'll be happy to listen.

I'm no expert by any means, but I might have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express a time or two....

Goin off the above stated data, and assuming your rifle is spitting them out @ 2650ish fps, with a 100 yd zero, 4.5 - 4.75 MOA should get you pretty close @ 300.

Somewhere on here or 6mmbr.com is the JBM ballistics calc. Might be a useful tool to get you some wind dope for Sat, and a baseline to start once you finger out your velocities.

Main thing, be safe, keep your eyes and ears open, and have fun. This is how you get started.

Re: First time at 300 yards and doing it in a match.

When I shot High power across the course(200,300 and 600yards)
the general comeups were..
100-200 2 minutes
200-300 3 minutes
300-600 10 minutes. this will get most people on paper and they can adjust to center. whether they shot .223..243,6.5-08,7mm-08,308 and 30-06
Long Range 800,900,1000yards
600 to 800 10 minutes
800 to 900 5 minutes
900 to 1000 6 minutes

hope it helps
