I know this is "old hat" to some of you guys here, but it absolutely amazing to me that I can actually hit a "known target" at this distance with a 22 lr. I've shot 10,000's of 22 lr rounds in the past, but never thought of the little "plinker" round as even being capable of being accurate much beyond 100 yards. I have seen what some of you guys are capable of with 22 lr and hope I can get to that level.

I didn't pick the best day to try my hand at 200 yards, but this is the day I had the time.

83 degrees wind 12-15 mph swirling, but mostly from the 9 to 3 and 10 to 4

I have the Anschutz 64 MP R zeroed at 50 yards and it took 25 MOA's to get close to zero at 200 yards with a 20 MOA DIP rail. I say close to zero becuase I was never dead on as the wind just kept blowing rounds every where. I did the best I could do to make adjustments as required, but the wind changes were constant.

I shot with bipod and rear bag. Under these conditions and my current skill set, I knew I would not have any chance to keep them on the paper at 200 yards without the rear bag.

It ain't pretty, but I'll take it as a beginning place.

Man I am just really excited about shooting again. I never thought it would be with a 22lr.

If in my exuberance I post too much, will someone "kindly" please just tell me to give it a rest.

I felt the same way when I first went beyond 100 yards. Didn't think it was possible to get to 200 yards, but after finding this site and gathering information on 20 - 25 MOA scope bases, subsonic ammo, and so forth,,, I put what I learned here to the test and haven't looked back. We now have members shooting out to 300 yards in our monthly .22 comps. Very interesting stuff to be sure!

Re: FIrst time ever to shoot a 22 lr at 200 yds

I appreciate the positive input and advice.

Tell me what type of flags are being used for 100-300 yds? I have seen an assortment of different ones being used from time to time by different shooters. Any favorites here?

How helpful would having a spotter be? My oldest son is completing an very nice centerfire build and he doesn't know it yet, but I just acquired another Anshcutz that he is going to start shooting with me. I can actually see my bullets at 100, but at 200 I was lost on the first attempt. Beyond 200 with a 22 lr, I am not sure how I would make sense of my firing sequence without a spotter.

Thanks again.

That first run I used CCI "Target" and if I remember correctly 1050 or 1060 fps. It shoots good out of my rifle, but I am testing other ammo, Eley Sport, Eley Black, among others. I thin CHeaper Than Dirt had a brick sale on Aquilla "Target" at $3.00/box. May try some of that as well.

Hopefully I will eventually find the one that my rifle likes best.

I had fired 600 rounds without cleaning the bore except running a dry patch through after range sessions. The last few rounds I fired at 100 yds seemed to open up a bit. After that session I ran a wet patch with some Hoppe's #9, NO BRUSH, and dry patched and oiled the barrel when done.

DFK Thanks for the "flagging" tips and I will put them to use in the next range session.

Good Shooting
