Would the coastguard think this is a Drug Mule boat or some wealthy mans boat?

The odd thing is they mounted all of the engines level with each other.
Three or more engines are normally mounted along the deadrise.
This hull would need some kind of pocket tunnel to allow level mounting like they did.
65mph is a little slow for that much horse power.

Looks like the two outers have some sort of water channel feed but the inner three get hull.

Shouldnt the prop be deeper than the hull?

The hull design could have a fairly flat deadrise at the stern to create a "planing pad" to facilitate speed.

Ridiculous.....hull speed is hull speed. Cool looking nonetheless....
Those outboards are a complete waste of horsepower.
Hull speed only would apply to displacement speeds, not planing hulls like this one.

Not 100%, but I would suspect that the middle motors have longer shafts then the outer motors. So that they appear closer to level.

Full on Jetfoils that rise up completely out of the water on 3 wing stilts and are powered by jet engines are amazingly smooth rides & turn like a plane. Then of course there is the speed they race along at.

The Hydrofoils that only have the bow come up out of the water leave the stern in for propulsion are a lot more of a rocky ride.

I used to have the chance to ride both regularly as high speed passenger ferries.

You know what you speak. 100% agree. I've had the great pleasure to ride on both as well arpund this vast globe. Sailing with the PHMRON's would leave a huge shit eating grin on your face. Never wanted to to go back pier side. They were that cool.

I was at the other end of the spectrum, riding in a wooden ship with a max speed of 14 knots.
It was a challenge to do astern refueling, the providing ship would be close to losing steerage way and we would be going damn near as fast as we could

Ok, @hermosabeach will forgive us for hijacking his awesome thread. You can't leave me hang'n here Brother. I don't know that boat, but I'm pretty certain I know that place because Fujisan in the background of that base reminds me of the long long ago. :giggle:

That is the USS Guardian, MCM 5. Mine Countermeasures.
We were based in Sasebo. 224 feet of oak and douglas fir.
I left there in 98. Did time on the Warrior MCM 10, the Dextrous MCM 13 (Bahrain) and the Gladiator MCM 11.

The Guardian was the ship that ran aground on the Tubbataha Reef in the Philippines. They decommissioned and dismantled the ship piece by piece to get it off the reef.

I met a CHENGs from one of the PHM's when I was on the Warrior in 96. He had some cool stories.
It is a shame the decomed them, but they did cost as much to operate as an FFG.

If the Gov't was sincere about the war on drugs, they would have transferred the PHM's to the Coast Guard

Very cool and thx for the explanation. Small world indeed. Always hit Sasebo at night for some reason. ;)
Never let us off the boat and the waterline always seemed to rise.
Yes the PHMRON's were spendy to run, but cool as shit. They did a lot of good work outta Key West and with the Coasties. I agree the Coasties coulda put them to good use. Terrible waste.

Bring back the IOWA class..... BB's are the Shit!!!!!

Everything else is a Wanna-B

You ain't lying Brother. Re-enlisted in 83 on the spot where the Japanese signed the surrender on the Mighty Mo when it was still Moth Balled in Bremerton while on the Connie in Dry Dock. 5 years later in the middle of the Indian Ocean on the Midway who shows up? The Mighty Mo !!! She put on one hell of a show for us just off our Port Bow. Lit off the big boys for the 4th of July and that night she lit off her CIWS with colored tracers that looked like rope flying over head in a spiral.

Ya, any Boat that can launch a 2,700 lb SMK :giggle: 20 something miles is pretty fucking awesome !!!!

The trend in offshore fishing is faster and faster as well as larger and larger, look at all the increasing demand for giant offshore center console boats with triple and quad 350 hp engines that do 60+ mph. While that may be fine and dandy down south where the canyons are close up here in the northeast that type of boat limits the number of days you can head offshore. Generally speaking there are very few days where you can run that fast without getting beat to death. Plus in a center console getting beat to death by the waves also means you are getting soaked because the boat cant throw the water far enough away for it to not get blown back on top of you.

We were in a tournament a few years back and there was a guy with a 42' Yellowfin pulled in behind us. They hose and dry the boat off then a few minutes later there is a guy wheeling a welding set down the dock to the boat. Turns out on the way in the wind picked up along with the waves but he didn't want to slow down below 40 and ended up cracking a bunch of the welds on the T-top.

Personally i'll stick to a boat with a helm so that you can get out of the elements, getting soaked for 3 hours on a 60 to 90 mile ride out doesn't sound like my idea of fun.

Speaking of battleships, I've got a couple of these. Plan was to put on either side of the driveway at the entrance but haven't gotten around to it.

Not only do I want a few of these, alongside my deck entrance,,, but I want 'wooden ones' inside as bars... but that's another story.
Remember me in your will,,,,, ok? Ol' buddy, Ol' Pal.... Ol' friend-o-mine.....

Are you kidding me? I was active duty when the Navy had the PHM’s and Congress didn’t even give us enough funding to keep our cutters running much less fuel and maintain those bastards! S-3 Vikings out of NAS Roosevelt Roads flew spotter missions for us and they spent more on fuel in a month than my cutter had for the entire year. Declaring a war on drugs is easy, paying for it is a bitch!

Hmm, a turned wood 16" projo! More of a metal guy but that would definitely be cool. Now looking for a big wood lathe!
