my grandfather decided that he'd get each one of his grandsons an m1a rifle their senior year of highschool. i'm the last one left and it's my senior year. my grandfther was dignosed with cancer last year and lost his arm to it. while he is now hppily residing with all of his family now, he can no longer shoot rifles like he used to. when my turn came around he handed me n old fvorite of his; his m1a supermatch (less that 1000 down the tube). the budget for my grad gift from my dad is around $700. i think that is enough to kit it up so my papa can see his old rifle the way he wanted it and i can finally move past the range of my ar15! i'm tired of lurking around here.

heres what i figgure:
$300- super sniper 10x , pretty basic but should work well
~$250 mount. sadlak? smith? which one?
~$80 rings... which ones
$60 karsten cheek piece. (the rifle is bedded in a g.i. stock. i'll get a mcmillan when i can afford it)

the plan was originally to get bolt gun to get started with lr shooting but now that i have what i have i may as well run what i've been handed. i'm not expecting better than 1moa accurcy. should get me out to 800 or so. if anyone has advice on mount/ring choice or knows where the best prices are to be had on some of the items on listed i'd pprecite hering it.

thnks,
Colt T

Re: fitting optics an m1a supermatch

I have a 1989 vintage super match, and have been through a SA 3rd gen mount, and a few scopes getting to this point.

I went with the Sadlak Airborne mount - fit without any jiggering, but if it is needed, Sadlak will grind the mount to fit, and provides you with the pins to measure what is needed.

I used Burris XTR rings I already owned - mid-height barely cleared the rear sight.

Similar scope choice, but mine is the 3x9 FFP mil/mil version.

Added an extension to replace the buttplate - my arms are 38".

If you are out buying goodies, the Sadlak bigger mag release is nice, as is the SEI extended bolt stop - installed both when I was using this rifle in three-gun games for a while, with a Millet 1x4 DMS.

I couldn't stand to drill into the walnut of my stock, so velcro on pad by cheeknstock.

enjoy - save some $ for ammo.

Re: fitting optics an m1a supermatch

Good advice; either the Smith or Sadlak mounts are good to go. Sadlak offers exceptional customer service. I have a Smith mount and Badger rings on my M1A, but the Badger rings are probably a bit of overkill. If I had to do it over, I'd probably buy a Sadlak mount and any good quality ring.
