Maybe not so much too coarse as not cluttered? Granted an MOA reticle with 2 MOA stadia lines is tighter than 1 mil, but that's why they teach them to move them around and measure more than once as needed. How many lines is too many? I think mil-dot is a good balance between cluttered and not. And, with each dot you can compound measurements and get what you need at longer ranges.

I have a S&B 10x42 with the mildot P3 reticule. I do not find it too coarse. Actually, it seems well suited for 10x. I prefer it to the SS 5-20x mil-quad at 10x, but that may just be personal preference.
