Someone asked me this morning if a Forster seating stem can have de burring burrs made at Forster de burred at home with a drill and steel wool.
I measured the run out of some rotary tools in my shop:
Makita battery powered hand drill 1 with after market key less chuck .0400"
Makita battery powered hand drill 2 with after market key less chuck .0250"
Milwaukee Magnum holeshooter drill with stock chuck .0025"
Rockwell drill press with aftermarket keyless chuck .0005"
Jet drill press with original keyed chuck .0050"
Grizzly mini lathe with original 3 jaw chuck .0035"
Rockwell 21-100 vertical mill with aftermarket keyless chuck .0020"
Precision Matthews PM1236 lathe with original 3 jaw chuck .0020"
I put some 0000 steel wool on the end of a Q-Tip.
I put the 260 Rem Forster J-30 seater stem in the Milwaukee drill chuck.
I examined the seater mouth with the junked binoculars eye piece, using it like a super jeweler's loop.
I spun the drill and pushed in the Q-tip, while holding the Q-tip some distance from the steel wool to allow the Q-tip to flex the .002" of drill run out.
I examined the seater mouth and found it to be improved from where I left it or Forster left it with sand paper marks.
What does it all mean?
Use the good drill.
