So I had an unused lee 223 die and took the expander out.

I tried running it down to get my normal .004 bump for semi automatic loads and hit the shell holder before I got the bump.

Is there a trick to this?
I want to run a mandrell separately.

My normal fl die is giving me .0035 - .004 nt and the mandrell made it .002 like I wanted but want to split the task.

The mandrell worked fine on the lee app and if I can size on it without expander it would be nice.

If your F/L die isn't giving the bump you want at max sizing, you can skim the bottom of the die or you can sand a shell holder down .005" or so. Taking the decapping rod out of a Lee (or any) die doesn't have anything to do with the F/L sizing capabilities.

I had this issue recently with a new 308 die. I contacted the manufacturer and sent the die back. They skimmed the die .008" and now, it works perfectly.

On occasion, setting the decapping rod too low in the die can cause the rod to hit the shell holder, stopping the die from full sizing. That doesn't seem to be your issue.

Not using enough case lube, causing heavy friction can cause the cases from not bumping enough. I've hd that happen and all I had to do was re-lube the case properly and resize in the die.

I don't know why that die was set back and not used. It was one of a two die lee set. Nice to know I have another seater I can set for a different bullet. Lol

Maybe I had trouble with it from the start? Been a while back.

I have a dillon 223 die used as a decapper right now to fit in the app , I can try it as soon as my replacement (unbreakable) universal decapper rod comes in.

My grandson is hard on equipment. Lol
