Hey guys, I really need to paint the barrel of my Grendel as a preemptive strike against FE2O3. I had the upper built custom and I can't figure out how to remove the hand-guard. It looks as though there might be a jam nut that needs a spanner to get off but I'm not sure and I don't want to start wrenching on things. Anyway here's a pic, maybe somebody has some idea?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Floating Hand-Guard Removal?

You can adjust the brightness in the pic to make it a little more visible, but yeah it looks like a 3 piece with a jam nut.

If it isn't safe jewelry you can do what I do in the absence of a proper spanner-I cut a length of 1/8" brass dowel from Ace Hardware and use that as a punch to spin it off. If you are careful you may not ding the alum/anodizing up badly...

Dings are no problem, they add personality. 10-4 Thanks Sober, I figured that's what it was but didn't want to start beating on it if I wasn't 100%. No safe jewelry here, I got this 6.5 for hunting as the .308 is just too heavy.

This is true, I have used both leather and rubber which I have gotten to work but the leather if by far a better choice. I took an upper to a gunsmith twice to have him install the barrel, gas block ect...well everytime I could hand untighten the barrel nut so I just decided to purchase whatever I would need to do it all myself. I have better shooting guns and learned everything about building an AR. Once you build your own you have a new respect for the AR. Good luck and let us know the outcome. Take care,

And don't let a bonehead help you that torques so hard the handguard caves in

You have seen this happen?

Re: Floating Hand-Guard Removal?

I was the bonehead.

I grabbed to much strap in the strap wrench and I was also down by the gasblock, not up by the barrel nut-forearm buckled. DPMS plain jane FF tube on LR308 IIRC.....
