Iam wanting to get my bolt fluted and I asked GAP if they offerd such a service and they brought up the fact that the bolt has been heat treated, so it seems (according to GAP) that it shouldnt be done. Does anyone know why? or have any info or experience?

thanks

Re: Fluting Heat Treated Bolt?

Depending on the treatment it may be very hard making it a pain in the ass to machine ,but I don't see them treating the whole bolt that way.

Unless they think its gonna make the bolt "move" from the material removal or stress implied while fluting , but the flutes generaly arn't that deep and if don't properly should not have any issues.

Maybe they just don't want to deal with it

Kerry probably told you that, thats a general statement not inclusive. Some bolts are surface hardened and fluting them is only possible with a cnc grinder. Remington bolts are only heat treated on the bolt nose so they can be fluted, We just dont do it here at our shop. Kampfield custom would be a good place to get one done.

Because barrels are not heat treated.
